What you or I think of them doesn't matter. It is what the fish thinks about them. I have seen the ads. As well as ads for every other type of jig, lure, spinner and bizz baits. I have had success with all and been skunked using each type. I fish one type for a while. If no success I switch. All depends on the conditions and what the fish want to bite on that day. I have a couple but would not have it be the only bait in my tackle box.
Giving my personal preference, I like plastic worms.

There are some definate advantages as far as finesse fishing with plastics. For example, say you're fishing a 5" finesse worm Texas rigged with a 1/8 oz. bullet weight. The worm and hook will spend half the time on the bottom where a fish can't really get to it until you make another presentation, and by then they may have moved on. With a shakey head, the jig head stands up leaving the bait exposed all the time. Keep in mind, this and really any finesse technique, is best suited when you have tough conditions in fairly clear, deep, water. It's a small bait, so your not likely to bag many trophies using it, but it could be the bait that puts keeper #5 in the boat. I've tried them all and the two that I prefer are Reaction Innovations "Screwed-Up Jig Head" and Buckeye Lures "Spot Remover".

They are simple to use and if fished with a floating worm like a Strike King 3x Floating worm makes a very lifelike appearance with good hooking properties. Fished slowly hopped along the bottom, feeding bass seldom pass up on this bait.
Here is a link to several different types of Shakey heads:

i have seen and heard of many many bass tourneys won with these. They are not a lure i would use all the time. On days where the bass are not active, this is a great lure. For them to be a great lure, you need to know how to fish them. They are actually very easy to use but using the wrong equipment can and will make it hard.
Use ball jig heads (1/8 oz to 5/16 oz) is best (but go heavier in really deep water) with a Strike King 3x Floating worm (as exert has mentioned) Rig this like a texas rig. Use a 7 ft medium action rod with 8-12 lb. flourocarbon line (for sensitivity)
color is also important. use watermelon and pumpkin colors in clear water and dark colors like black, blue, purple (junebug is excellent) in dirty water
these are not bait use to cover water but work excellent during cold front conditions or heavily fished waters. also great for hot weather (like right now for the midwest and south)
i really like these lures and i will use them more often as i work my way to the pros with KVD, mike iaconelli, steve kennedy, skeet reese, and dean rojas
good luck!
