I've only seen about 2 people that have legitimate answers.

If you're a kid that's wondering how to get access to an AK-47, then get the hell out of the hunting section.

If you're a new gun owner, in most states you can get a semi-auto one easily just like getting any other rifle. You can get it as cheap as $350. If you live in California, Illinois, or New York City, there are a lot of restrictions on it.

You can use it for hunting, the 7.62x39 is adequate enough to take out whitetail, but the problem is the accuracy. Consistent shot placement is near impossible after 100 yards. However, I do not recommend using the AK-47 for hunting.

Again, I hope that you're not a kid that wants to shoot up a school, this is a typical question that a kid would ask.

The AK47 is a gun designed for hard use. Invented by a tank mechanic in Russia during world war 2,it is perhaps one of the most prolific weapons produced anywhere. The 7.36X39 cartridge is powerfull enough to hunt deer with. Where I live you could purchase a semiutomatic version at a Gun Store, providing you are over 21 and not a felon.

WOW Where did all the jerks come from? If this is the type of weapon that interests you take a look at an SKS it shoots the same ammo and is alot cheaper. This weapon has a fixed mag and is more like a rifle than the assault style AK. DJ is right the ballistics are very close to the 30-30 and if you use Winchester ammo it should work fine for deer.

An AK-47 is not a machine gun, nor are AK-47s, machine guns, etc. illegal in the USA.

Depending on if you live in a Fascist-ruled state like Kalifornia or not, you should be able to find a semi-auto variety of AKs at your local gun shop. Check a few and see if they carry them.

Also, in some states you can certainly hunt with a semi auto AK and a five round magazine. All it is is a semi-auto carbine with medium ballistics that can take down a deer as good as a .30-30.

Much to the chagrin of old-fart hunters and the gun grabbing Fascist-Liberals, many younger hunters are taking to the fields with AKs and SKSs and bringing home the deer. I am one of them.

Follow the link to see laws in your state.

Any gunstore.

It is ok to hunt with just use the small 5 round mag it comes with. I have taken several deer with my SKS which is the same type caliber as the AK shoots.

Am assuming you want a semi-auto AK; which is perfectly legal to hunt with; and very good to hunt with, by the way. You have to buy a 5 shot magazine for it. Recommend the Romanian model. Check out J & G, SARCO, SAMCO, INTER ORDNANCE, SOG, and go to GUNSAMERICA on plug in AK47. You can buy them from 279 and up; bought a nice Romanian for 389.00. They are indestructible and last forever.

It depends on the state you are hunting in. In Colorado you could use it if you had a 10 rd magazine in it. But quite frankly it is a very underpowered round if you have to make a long shot. If you want one, by all means get one. They are a very interesting gun. But get only the semi-auto version of the gun. The full auto is very expensive to buy and to shoot. In power the 7.62 x 39 is about like our 30-30 Win. round which is in itself a fine short range cartridge. But then it is always loaded with a flat nose bullet and that makes a nice hole. Where the 7.62 x 39 round is loaded with a pointed (spitzer) bullet. (Because of it being an auto loader) and while there are good hunting bullets in the spitzer profile the velocity of the 7.62 round limits it's proper mushrooming to short ranges. I have two of the AK-47 rifles and my son and I love to shoot them. One of ours is in 5.56 (.223 Rem.) and it is very accurate. Collecting guns of the world is a fun and exciting hobby. Go for it.

I just walk down the road to the gun store and buy mine. He also has tons of ammo and other extras. As for hunting, sure you can use it, but why when there are better rifles out there.

apparently alot of people who have answered this question, except for dj, don't have a clue as to what they are talking about. yes you can legally own a SEMI AUTO ak-47. and yes, the round it fires, the 7.62x39 is an excellent short range whitetail cartridge. remember the commie-clinton 10 round limit is long gone. thank gawd. so, hey everybody, get your heads out of your butts.
