Not just by religions, but in almost every culture around the world as well. Forced into subservient roles in marriages, stricken of their free will in choosing a husband in some countries, biologically presumed to be inferior, and ever destined to bear child, women don't have it easy in any country according to custom. Religion merely justifies the woman's slave status.

Because people are misinterpreting the scriptures. The Bible in no way teaches that women are inferior. We have a very dignified role, and should be respected - Ephesians 5:28 & 29 - 1 Peter 3:7.

This is a false and long standing notion that has been proliferated by cultures around the world. God created woman to be a helper for man. He declared that neither is the man without the woman nor the woman without the man before God. They were given divine differences in nature, being physical, mental and spiritual. Their natural roles are intended to compliment each other so that they can work together as a team in training and preparing the next generation to carry on in mortality. The man was given the primary role of providing for and protecting the family and presiding over family decisions. He is to do that in the true spirit of husbandry, in other words to care for and nurture the family members he is responsible for, including his wife as well as his children. The woman was given the primary role of bearing and nurturing the children, entering a real partnership with God to bring His children to earth. She stabilizes the home and family relationship and does those things that the man is not particularly good at doing. She comforts, nurtures, educates and trains her children to become the responsible adults of the future. Because the man was given the leadership or presiding role in life, man has also usurped an unrighteous dominion from that role and rationalized himself into thinking that was his right. Man is wrong and any unrighteous dominion exercised by the man against his wife and children will be answered on his own head in due time.
Man and woman are equals in God's sight and should always treat each other accordingly.

Because the religions that were dominant, and thus needed to be crushed, were often nature- and goddess-worship, which gave power to women. In order to most effectively supplant these beliefs, the new religions had to go the opposite way, by taking power away from women.

Average muscle-mass, I imagine.

Plus for that very reason (and others relating to particulars of mental functioning), the ancestral males were the providers upon which staying alive hinged.... while the females played a less pivotal role in staying alive.

Men invented these religions and used them to subjugate women and reduce us to slave status. Religions still do this today. The Catholic church is the worst, they deny women's intellectual abilities and equality with men. They reduce women to the level of barnyard animals for breeding purposes only.
