and what do I have to do? Do I need to wait untill I get a document saying I am married and my name has changed? I know it's kind of a dumb question, but I've been so busy, I kind of forgot that this was next.
Thanks

Go to the Social Security office with a copy of your marriage certificate/license.

Ok, first you have to go to the court house and get some certified copies of your marriage certificate. I know here they are 3 bucks a peice.
You mail one into social security with your current card. They will mail you back a new on with the new name. Your job can not change your name until social security has changed it first.
Take a copy of the certificate to the DMV or where ever you get your drivers license. They will change your name there. Once that is done, you can take that and go to the bank to get your checks, atm and account changed.
Then you have to call for cable bills, phone bills, and credit cards to be changed. Some places ( like the place you send your car payment too) may require that you send a copy of the marriage certificate.
I recommend you getting at least 5 copies of the certificate done just incase places want an offical copy of the marriage certificate.

Wow. I got married in June and I JUST did this. First off, you need your marriage license. They will need it EVERYWHERE you go. And I mean everywhere. Then, you need to go to the Social Security Office and take care of business there. Next, DMV for a new license. Now when I went, I was changing states as well as my name and I had to have my Social Security Card. If you run into this problem, the SS office can give you a printout and that will work. Then, I went to join our bank accounts and to change the name on them. That was a pain! Then, you need to make sure any credit cards you have (visa, gas card, etc) have the name changed as well. Some of these you can do online and some you have to mail in a copy of the license. Thats as far as I can think right now. But congrats!

First of all - CONGRATULATIONS!

Next off, head on down to the courthouse and get copies of your marriage license - you will need them for EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. I'm sure the cost varies from county to county & state to state, but since they have to be notarized, take some cash with you to cover the cost of copies. (My copies were $2 a copy, BTW).

While you're there, ask if they have the form to request a new Social Security card - that way, you can just mail in your marriage license and request a new card (MUCH easier than heading to the SS office!!). You should have your new card in about 10 days.

Next off, head to the DMV - new license. Now that your ID matches your new name, you can hit the bank(s), and your utility companies - electric, gas, water, cable, phone (landline and wireless!), and your credit cards. Other than that, you've got your mortgage/lease, your car, your employer and your passport.

Good luck!

It was not as overwhelming as I thought it would be...

1) Wait for your official marriage certificate to arrive in the mail

2) Read all info here
http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=315
and fill out the form SS-5 and take it to a local SSA office with your marriage certificate in hand and any other required forms of ID they require

3) Once you receive your new social security card in the mail, head over to Department of Motor Vehicles for a new license with your new name on it. Bring your new social security card with you.

4) Once you have your new license and new social, you can go ahead and call all of your credit cards, insurance companies, etc. Most of credit cards allowed me to change my name over the phone. Some made me fax over a name change letter with a copy of my new drivers license on it.

First of all get a copy of your marriage certificate. Then go to the Social Security office and then to the DMV to get it changed on your license.
Also remember to change your name on your bank accounts.

Do you have your marriage license, or certificate of marriage? Start with the Social Security office. Next, go to the Driver's License office. Don't forget the bank, your employer, and any credit cards you have. Congrats! Good luck.

You will need to get your marriage license and then take it to the SS office and change your name. Then go to the DMV and get your new license. Then to change your credit cards call or fill out the form with each bill and they will send you a new card.

First, take your marriage certificate to motor vehicles and get your name changed on your driver's license. Then, take your driver's license with your new name on it to the social security office and get a new one. Everything else you might need to change can be done with the driver's license.

Start at your local social security office with your old card and you marriage cert. Then, change your information at your work. Next step is to change all of your bills, insurance, health insurance, doctor's office and dentist. There will always be one that you forget. Don't worry.

Congrats
