Are diamondback mountain bikes very good? I'm looking at the MTN Hardtail Peak model (around $250). I'm not a very serious biker, but want something of high quality.

Diamondbacks are good for the money. They are the MTB brand of Raleigh and so, while not as good as their more expensive rivals, offer a reasonable machine.

The components are what I would expect at this price range. The Suntour forks are OK and will give you a reasonable ride. The Altus gears are viable. Not as flash are a 27 speed, but the Shimano gears are consistent and the Altus will offer an advantage of not cloging too much.

The Kenga tyres are OK, but not top end. The separate rear derailier mount is good. This will save your frame if you scrag your derailier.

The heat treated alli frame looks reasonable. Overall, not a bad package. You will not be the fastest on a club run, but it will allow you a reasonable XC ride.

Room to upgrade on this machine, but not a bad first XC machine.

Luck

It is a good bike for the bucks. If you can swing it I would probably go for the Response Disc... I think it is like $300 or $350.
