The implications?There is a certainty here,Turkey will invade.The Turks and Kurds have been at each others throats for a long time you know.
If Kurdistan were to secede,it would only be eaten alive by Turkey.
Let me draw an analogy.If I decided to leisurely stroll through every neighborhood in Detroit:I would stand a better chance of living to tell about it,than Kurdistan would if it secedes.

Kurds have no intention of seceding from Iraq, according to their prime minister, Barzani. The Kurds favor division of Iraq into 3 semi-autonomous regions under a federal system.

This is the same plan put forward by Senator Joe Biden and Leslie Gelb more than 18 months ago.

From the US perspective, it would cut down on the amount of sectarian violence that is occurring in Iraq, because it would be on less faction that is fighting to avoid being under Shiite control.

From their perspective, they would likely have some peace in their region -- until they are attacked by Turkey.

Neither the rest of Iraq nor Turkey will stand for it, and most Kurds realize that's so, which is why they're being so cooperative.
