it happens frequently...i always read the posters profile, the questions they ask and a few of their responses to question they answered. this tell you a lot.
also, i read how the 'question' is phrased, you can tell more about a person's true motives from this rather than the 'question' itself.
if all their settings are private, then i usually don't respond since they are not really interested in my opinion, they are just looking for affirmation of their view or taking it as an op to vent. these are called 'trolls'.

or could it be, heaven forbid, that some people aren't just on one side and actually have views of the opposing party on different issues?
It's called being individual. As well as thinking for yourself. Though sadly, it doesn't seem like some people on here can actually do either.

It happens all the time. To make others of that ilk not want to be associated with that side of the issue and to try to convince more neutral observers that everyone on whatever side of the issue is insanely radical (in whichever direction.) You see it all the time on both sides.

I have often thought the same thing. Especially when you see the same questions over and over again...
I am clueless on a motive.

Its called trolling. They are just kicking the hornets nest. I see a lot of libs pretending to be cons and ask the silliest questions to make themselves look dumb and vice versa.

Some people do it get an emotional rise from others.
Some do it so that they can actually hear the arguments made by the "other side" -- which are more freely given if you actually appear to be on the same side.

It can be a case of playing "devil's advocate" and trying to get members of your own side to get involved.
