Jesus Christ, being God, was the only One who could pay the ultimate price as our substitute. He died in our place. Every human being inherits the sin nature from the father of the human race, Adam. The moment Adam disobeyed God, he sinned and the sin nature passed on to every human being. When Jesus was conceived in Mary's womb, He was conceived without a human father and therefore his body was sinless. In the Old Testament sacrifices, which all pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, the sacrifice had to be pure and blemish free. Yet even though the offerings were pure, Adam’s sin tainted all of creation – every living thing is polluted with Adam’s sin. In order to save mankind God had to send His only Son - who was holy, harmless, undefiled and separate from sinners, to take on human flesh and die in our stead. God is so holy that no sin can enter His presence and God had pity on us. He knows we need Him. God is love and therefore He was willing to let His Son die for you and me and every human being He has ever created. And that is why He had to die that way. Now that He has laid down His life and taken it up again and risen from the dead, all we have to do is believe in Him and confess ourselves as sinners and trust the Lord Jesus Christ as our Personal Saviour. With that, we are immediately ushered into the presence of God and our relationship to God is restored.
Why do saints suffer? I can only quote the Bible: Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4: 16-18). Unbelievers do not have the hope of eternal life where there will be bliss unimaginable by the human mind. They are not being perfected through suffering. They are going on (no skin off their noses) blissfully in their present bodies along the broad road that leads to hell and destruction. They do not believe and therefore condemn themselves when God has given them the option to choose life. To quote the Bible: they are treasuring up for themselves wrath in the day of wrath. But for us, who believe, there is no wrath to come – only eternal bliss. The sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

The letter of Hebrews tells us that Jesus needed to be perfected through suffering. This was the way for him to learn 100% obedience.
The same holds true for his brothers, the Saints. These, true, are from imperfect mankind. Still, as it states about Abraham, his faith was perfected. Similarly, the faith and the obedience of the Saints must, MUST, be perfected before they die.
If they were not you would have beings resurrected to immortality that had sinful tendencies and that cannot be allowed. God cannot permit such to enter the heavens and become immortal kings and priests next to himself and Christ.
Thus, through the furnace of affliction, through the refiner Christ Jesus who sits and refines his brothers, they are cleansed of all tendency to sin. Those who fail are disapproved and go to the Lake of Fire. Since all tendency to sin has been tested while alive on earth, they will not sin ever even if they have free will in heaven --- because they don't want to.

No matter what one day we all have to face death.
These great masters want to enlighten us to strive for eternal bliss which is achieved by transcending all the things which is appearing on the mortal plane.
They prove that it is practically possible to transcend this mortal plane. For them all things that we have here is a passing experience and one who is enjoying bliss that is nothing as for them pleasure and pain are on the same grounds.
Madness or the virus of materialism or worldliness is so high in all of us that saints who out of pity are ready to teach us the way of life leading to God even at the cost of sufferings and death.

Jesus have to die that way because that was the capital punishment of that day, if it was today Jesus would get the leather needle of death. why Jesus and most saints have to suffer so much? Because Satan hates God. Jesus came to set you free and the saints came to bring that good news, which is real bad for Satan.

Unique people with unique insights are threatening. But, remember many of the saints were taught to be attached to the 'ideal' of suffering like Jesus, while he was TRYING to communicate how to "skip" it and experience 'abundant life.'
Jesus' life story is packed full of metaphors he intended to leave as psychological clues for us to follow in our own journey toward authentic being. Why would a person choose to use a gruesome death as the primary metaphor?
Just a couple of examples of psychological clues:
Humans fear physical death and he provided an exaggerated example that even crucifixion could be overcome, but it is the body-level EGO that fears existential death usually associated with public shaming, abandonment, helplessness, hopelessness etc. This is the big psychological challenge we all face.
Also, Jesus' last few miracles (ten demons over the cliff, raising an 'old man' from the dead etc.) are experiences we encounter as we get close to achieving our own ego death as well representing his ego remorse linking back to the Infancy Gospel accounts of early childhood. Also, the ego is put to death ONLY by giving up all of our learned 'defenses' which he demonstrated on his way to his crucifixion.
Being nailed to the cross - between worlds/realities is a very human dilemma. The symbolism is particularly apropos re: our feet nailed into this dimensional reality surrounded by the three Marys at the foot of the cross, symbolizing our ego attachment to this experience of reality (the feminine unconditional mother love, Mary the follower/supporter of his unique vision and Mary Magdalene who knew and loved him best). All are significant to staying connected to one's essential nature, BUT have to be given up for ego-death and resurrection of the Christ Self within and fulfillment of purpose. Even after Mary discovers him risen, his admonition - do not approach me has symbolic psychological significance.
The last part of the journey to 'being' and unity with god/reality/purpose is only accomplished alone - detached from other ego needs and attachments.

Who knows? Why do people ever die horrible deaths? It's just the way of the world. Ever watch a lioness catch a zebra? The world can be cruel.

whenever you try to impose change in anything, you will have so many obstacles in your way and it will be very difficult. So when saints try to change a whole system of beliefs, they must encounter such hardships.
