Seniors are qualified, but it's hard to find jobs that match our skills and abilities. It is said that companies want to hire seniors because we are reliable, but we find it hard to find those jobs, unless we want to make only minimum wage. What's up with that concept?

I have personally been doing a bit of research on work from home companies for about 4 1/2 months now and i"ve run into quite a few good companies that you can do in your spare time and earn a stable income.People who work for these companies generally are college students, stay at home moms, retired persons, people looking for a second or third income. I have been scammed by a few companies as well I have all information posted on my blog for people looking to work from home I also have a list of companies to watch for. Most people think that if they charge a fee then its a scam but my research has proven to differ. Believe it or not most of the scams that I've been through were free to join you can view more info here

I agree that may seniors are physically and mentally capable of holding full-time good paying jobs, and many wish they could find them. While age discrimination is illegal, it's also a fact of employment, and difficult to prove. The reason more companies don't actively recruit seniors is due to liability issues. Statistics shows that seniors are twice as likely as their younger counterparts to injure themselves on the job. Even if a senior is medically covered by Medicare, federal laws require that all other health insurance options be used BEFORE Medicare will pay. Therefore, a companies Workman's Comp insurance is the first to pay out for job related injuries, followed by private health insurance and finally Medicare. This means if a company hires seniors, their Workman's Comp insurance will go up proportionally, and private health insurance costs are increased within their employee pool, on the likelihood that the employed senior will be injured on the job (require more care, take longer to heal, etc). Additionally, seniors are also prone to longer illnesses, and more time missed from work as a result. Many companies just don't want to deal with the scheduling issues when this occurs, so steer away from hiring the older population.

I think they worry about health benefits and how seniors have more serious illnesses, costing the medical plan.

Also, older people are often inflexible, resist change (learned this when I was a manager and had a few seniors working for me). And, younger managers are sometimes uncomfortable managing/leading someone the age of their parents.

I agree it's a shame, but there are reasons, rational and otherwise, that seniors have a hard time getting hired.

That said, if I do a search on google for

jobs seniors

I find millions of hits, like this:

If you haven't been diligently researching sites like this, then you aren't being resourceful (not trying to be rude, just honest).

A lot of it has to do with the culture of the company. While retirees are mature and can bring a wealth of expereince, they can also bring health issues related to aging. Many companies are self insured so they are very aware of health costs.

I can tell you from personal experience that there are companies looking for mature, experienced people. In fact, when in my mid-50's a former employer told me to consider his offer the "beginning of my career, not the end of it".

Another problem can locale. The larger the city, the greater the opportunities.

The jobs are out there, you just have to look for them.

You're correct - there's a lot of discrimination, as well as companies who don't comprehend the value of seniors.
