There are 2 different companies showing up on my credit report for the same debt. I disputed it with each of the 3 report bureaus but they all came back & said that the debt was verified. Should it be on there twice? I want to pay it off but I don't know who to pay.

It's for an old utility bill and neither of them are the original debtor.

When you disputed the entries, did you point out that it was a duplicate? Collection agencies are not allowed to re-age a debt.

Contact the newer of the two listings and ask them to mail you verification of the debt. You can negotiate a settlement but make sure to get it in writing before you pay. You can ask that they remove the negative completely but they may not agree. A paid negative is always better.

Check your credit report very closely. If they are for the same debt, one of them should be reporting a zero balance as they may have sold it to the other. It is a very sticky situation when it comes to dealing with debts being sold and resold. Calling both of them and having them explain where you account is within their company should help. Some collection companies also have secondary companies under different names that they will send "uncollectable" debt to. The secondary company often uses harsher tactics to get the debt paid. This could be 2 different companies, but if one sold to the other, the first of the 2 needs to delete their reporting on the bureau reports. You can only have 1 collection company reporting on an account at one time. This also goes for the "sister companies" scenario I mentioned earlier. Hope this helps, good luck to you!

Company A could have sold your debts to Company B thus the report reflected two companies. Connect with both companies and find out who should you pay to and clean up the report.

Most likely what has happened is your original debt was charged off by the credit card company and they then sold it to a collection company.

If this is whats showing up on your credit report, you owe the collection company not the credit card company.

call each one and find out what's going on. One of them probably bought the debt from the other.
