I know what you are going with. Traditionally it would not. It was less formal. However now days the post office won't deliver any larger items without a return address. A lot of wedding invites are the larger square size and the post office told me they are required by law to dispose of them. Wouldn't that be horrible to have them throw away all your invites???
However etiquette wise, a formal event should have the return address on the back flap of the envelope. Same with the response card.

the outer envelope should have a return address in case of mailing problems. The inner envelope should be blank and enclosed should be the invitation, response card with your envelope addressed to your home. Also your reception card with a small map. If you run into any more problem just google wedding invitation assembly. congrats.

The envelope that the invitation gets mailed in should have a return address. Usually the post office won't mail it without some sort of return address - either on the front or on the rear flap.

Most of the time the outter evelope has a return address on it. When I ordered my invitations the return address was on the envelop flap (you know the part you are suspose to lick to make it stick shut). You want to make sure that all your invitations are delivered and no one is left out just because of an address problem, also if it is returned you know not to add them in your head count.

Yes, with anything you mail, the envelope should have a return address in case it needs to be returned to you. If you get your invitations printed with a company, they usually offer the option to make you pre-printed outer envelopes.
