Christianity doesn't have anything directly to do with making better persons. The point is that we have in our human natures the desire to know our Creator.

Yes, and anyone can misuse their positions as leaders.

Religion can provide a guide on how to be a better person - e.g. the commandments - don't lie, steal, covet you neighbors wife or goods etc. What happens is that some people want it to guide there every decision and want someone to tell them what to do - like sheep - in fact many religions use the shepard and flock analogy.
Look for something to guide your behavior - maybe Ghandi or a philosopher or a religion but don't try to have it tell you exactly how to behave in a complex 21century society

You can do what ever you choose even invent your own religion. God gives you that choice to love Him or find reasons not to.
You can in you own mind ignore the rules you don't like and just believe in the fun parts. Or you can read the word of God and really find the answers.
By the way I am a sheep. I'm a Ram.

religion with out the Holy Spirit is just another dead powerless religion. But God has made a way for us to be filled with The Holy Spirit by repentance, and accepting Jesus Christ into our hearts. That makes a whole lot of difference.

I'm a Nihilist of sorts (technically a Hui-Qu'ist, as I call it).
I realised long ago that existence itself has no point to it. To ask of religion is downright laughable.

That said... I know what causes people to cling to religion, and indeed what caused them to cling to religion in the first place. Many people are dependant on it.... as they are too weak to accept reality without it.
In that respect, it does have a point: to keep a lot of people from going totally nuts and offing themselves.

The feeling that religion has no point to it is preceeded by the feeling that life in general has no point to it. Regardless of what caused the latter emotion, religion generally rejuvenates the human spirit.

Religion is something that is taught from a child. I was taught it myself. I ( in my opinion ) realized it just didn't add up. There are too many loopholes with no answers. If people want to believe, that's okay. I choose not to.

Some religions change as often as possible to please the crowd showing that god has change his mind, well God will never change his mind and will not condone certain sins to make the people happy. Some religions have become like evolution theory not fact.

Obviously you have never been affiliated with religion to know what it is like. Religion has given me moral, values, the will to help others and a true sense of love.

Am I such a bad person?
