Farthest shot?
(I've made farther, but here's the one I'm proud of)
A 400 yard offhand beer bottle neck-shot with an iron-sighted Mini-14.
With the sun behind the target.
With witnesses.
Ahhhh.
Closest shot?
I bent down and lifted up a burlap bag with the barrel of a Rohm snubnose .22, to find a coiled copperhead under it ready to strike.
I'd say it was six to eight inches.
Eeeek!

I've fired an SKS rifle. They're reliable, fun to shoot and have a pleasant recoil, but they're not the most accurate rifle available. The 7.62x39mm cartridge is the most economical centerfire rifle cartridge I know of. Which is good, because you may need several cartridges to hit a small target with a rifle that shoots groups which measure 4 minutes-of-angle on a good day. It is able to harvest deer up to 150 yards away. The size of the hog will affect how effective this cartridge is on hogs (the bigger the hog, the less effective the 7.62x29mm cartridge is). When SKS rifles could be purchased for $250 dollars or less, they were a nice bargain. Now that they cost $350 to $400+ dollars, they're not quite the bang-for-the-buck they used to be. Still, they can mount a bayonet (where legal) and a Ruger Mini-30 cannot. :-) If you have an extra $200 to $300 dollars, it is possible to purchase a civilian version of the AK-47 rifle. Although it shares the SKS's poor accuracy, it has a greater magazine capacity. I don't think the SKS rifles are ugly. They've got a "form-follows-function" appeal that grows on me.

Almost all my hunting shots for large game are between 100 and 300 yards. I have taken a 400-500 yard shot at a whitetail with my Remington 700, I hit it in the vitals, but I don't think I got it in the heart or lung because it ran for at least 60 yards before it finally dropped. I regret taking that shot because the deer must've suffered for at least 10 minutes before it died.
My closest shot at something bigger than a varmint is a wild boar with my .44 magnum from approximately 15 yards, hunting with a revolver is so much different.
The closest shot was a few inches, it was a suffering rodent of some kind getting eaten alive by ants.

Closest:
I once stepped on a Pheasant. I was following its tracks through the snow and they came to a stop is a clump of grass. I kicked the clump of grass a little to see if it was still there. It jumped out and scared the living piss out of me so much, I rose up and shot almost instantly. The bird must have only been about 2-5 yards away from the tip of my barrel. I was so close, I shot the birds head clear off.
Longest:
Estimated at about 125 yards hunting Deer with a 250 grain .35 Rem. (250 grain .35 Rem is a Very large Bullet I use for close range hunting in thick swamps. The larger bullet will go through a tree and hit a target behind it.) I was shocked and surprised to hit that deer with that gun at that distance. I air balled on the first shot, and hit him with the second.
Up close and Personal:
Once while golfing at a golf course i was working at, a mole started running across the green. I came out of the bunker after my approach shot to find him running right at me. I had a Sand Wedge in my hand at the time, so I whacked him on the head and through him in the bushes.
Since then I gained the nick name OOSW Mole Assassin.

My farthest shot? A wild boar at 600 yards w/.25-06 Remington; he got away. Next farthest was a deer at 250 yards w/the same .25-06; that shot brought home the 'bacon' (neck shot, right on). Closest, an old spike buck at sixty yards (same rifle also right on, neck shot).

Shortest was a grouse that may have been trying to land on the barrel of my 20 gauge or looked it at least. It was maybe two yards from the muzzle when it turned into a cloud of feathers.
Longest on game was slightly over 500 yards on a prairie dog with a .243. There are 600 and 1,000 yard matches here that I have tried without winning.

The farthest shot I've taken was one hell of a lucky one. It was the first day of elk season and I saw a huge buck on a hill 778m away according to the range finder. It would be long gone by the time I would be able to get close enough to take a good shot, so I just went for it. I took a potshot from our deck using the balcony railing for support and I actually hit the thing in the neck and it just fell down dead. I was stunned. But it took me quite a while to find him.
My closest was a wild boar at damn near point blank range. I was boar hunting with a .45acp pistol and the little ****** charged me from behind, I heard him coming and turned around and fired 2-3 shots. When he fell he was no more than 5 feet away.

Aaron, you know the area I hunt so my farthest shot is pretty close. 70 yards close, in fact. Got my deer with .54 caliber Hawken rifle.
Closest shot about 8 feet. Both the deer and I were surpised at the time and neither was expecting the other. Good luck this fall.

Longest shot was with my 22-250 Remington bdl bull barreled Rifle equipped with a 20X redfield target scope on a woodchuck at 375yds. He was standing up when I hit him dead on in the nose*.. The shortest shot was on a cottontail rabbit being chased by my Beagle Dog Sandy at less than a yard from the end of my over and under 22 long Rifle and 410 gauge shotgun* Sandy was 2 inches from the end of the rabbits tail when I fired. Sandy ran right over top of the rabbit as it tumbled end over end. That was my first rabbit that I ever shot at.
