There isn't a way to test your eyes at home other than for weather or not you can see up close or far away. You need to see your optometrist yearly for your eye health. They can detect things like cataracts, macular degeneration, brain tumors, high blood pressure, glaucoma, detached retina's and simple eye infections too. Most eye related things can be treated at the early stages and significantly reduce your chances of losing your eyesight. Plus testing your vision at home doesn't tell optician what exactly you need by way of prescription you need a signed one by a doctor for them to fill it. Maybe you just need a new eye doctor

You should have come to me before I retired.
I often had families laughing out loud during exams.

There's a definite need not to be formal, especially with people who don't generally like the experience.
But what do we do that's so dreadful...?
(as a class that is, I've known a few terrifying optometrists)

To answer your question, I'm sorry but, as you can't look inside your own eyes, there is just no way to adequately or safely assess them at home.
