Its round about 5 hrs and 300 miles. You can get there faster but that is roughly how long it takes me to get from Sunderland to Surrey which is only about 10 mins difference either way.

I would recommend you take the train from Darlington to London, if you can buy a ticket you can save money.
You could look at "Journey Planner" for National Railways.
A single fare is £12.35 which is called "GNER Standard Advance 1". A "Saver Rerurn " costs £89.70.
Also you should look at the website for GNER which covers the London to the North-east and Scotland. By blooking a train ticket online you can get 10% discount for your fare.
If you have a ralicard you can get a discount, for example "Young Persons Railcard". The journey by train is between 2 hours and 38 mins to 2 hours 50 minutes.

You could take a coach. You should look at National Express or MegaBus. This journey would be slower but a lot cheaper.
The MegaBus departs from Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
