1. "I am an atheist, but I truly wish I could believe in God. But things keep croping up that, try as I might, I can't believe it. It's like trying your damnedest to believe in the toothfairy, and even though I *really* want there to be one, I just know there isn't."
That is why its called Faith. And some people do have reasons and evidence to believe that he is real. My family has several.
2. The whole point of Christianity is to believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins and that he is the savior of the world - If that wasnt the basis we wouldnt even have Christianity.. we would all be Jewish.

According to what I know about the scriptures #1 Yes, #2 Yes.
I am not God, and only He can and will make that judgment. Jesus tells us in the Bible,"I and my Father are one" So if you believe in God, you also believe in Jesus.
John 3:16 says"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him, would not perish, but have everlasting life." So this tells me that in spite of how good you may be and all of the prayers to God you might make, if you do not believe in Jesus, all is lost.
Again, God makes the call. Not me.
May I make this point. So many non-believers think that the only reason we as Christians are Christians, is to avoid Hell.
Heaven will be a reward for faithfulness, but having Jesus in your heart each day and knowing that He is with you, where ever you go or what ever you do, and being able to talk to Him one on one, is the greatest blessing, this side of Heaven.

Under a christian cosmology, people are all going to Hell due to the initial fall from grace in the garden of Eden.
Sin sends humanity to hell, not God.
The idea is that Jesus is the lifeboat. If you believe in Him, He forgives your sins no matter what and you are, well, off the hook.
Bottom line, if you don't believe that Jesus paid the price for your sins, you go to South Dakota, I mean hell. Understand, there are lots of different Christians, each puts their own spin on it, but that is the basic idea.
Other religions see it other ways.

Certainly.
Are these different people? It looks like it.
How can one be trying to seek God yet openly rejecting him? It doesnt sound like person #1 has any faith at all, just fear. And that fear is driving them towards a want of salvation their human mind is telling them it doesnt need yet their spirit needs. So they are left in an ideal situation for Satan where he can pluck out the seed of faith before it even hits the ground.
Person #2 isnt a child of God like they think.
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. -John 8:42-44
Jesus made many claims to the effect of he was the son of God, and that he was the only way to salvation. People like person #2 falsely label Jesus as this prophet who taught some good things and pointed the way toward God yet reject his message. If someone claims to be the son of God and isnt, they are a false prophet and not a very good one at all. If someone claims to be the only way to Heaven and isnt, they are either a liar or lunatic of the worst order.
Neither will go to Heaven because both reject the Gospel. (good news of Christ)

No one can say what your path is ...It is between You and God...Jesus told us to "judge not" we are called to love you, that is the part of Christianity that I think people miss, and what I believe Jesus ministry was all about. so simple
we are to work out our own salvation.
I know that this is not a direct answer to your question, but it is the best I could come up with to reply to the scenario you presented...Grace be with you.
edit: It is a promise from God, that if you seek his truth, he will reveal it to you. I was involved in a cult, and I put the burden of proof back to God....I told him that I would go searching, but since I was deceived so badly, I was unable to tell what was right or wrong....god has directed me and my spiritual healing.

All I can say is instead of talking about it give Jesus Christ a 100% sincere chance and follow him with your life he will never let you down. That is part of the problem people can tell someone how good something taste but until they truly and sincerely try for themselves they wont know. Jesus is God and will never let you down if you turn to him and ask for forgiveness today friend.

when you don`t believe in Jesus then definitely you are going to hell. Jesus said that, He is the way, the truth and the Light no one comes to the Father (God) except through Him. He also said in the book of John 2:16. that as many as received him, he has given them the right to become the children of God, even to them believed Him.
so why don`t you sit back and think right before it becomes too late to you. don`t forget that Jesus loves you and He cares for you. remember that He came and die as a punishment for your sins. He still loves you no matter what or how you are, just come to him the way you are and he will never leave you, He loves you. and i care too.

1) You're not really an atheist. You're an agnostic. Apart from belief in God and trust in Jesus Christ for your salvation, you're hell-bound.
2) If you live by a set of rules you've missed the point of what God wants for you. If you don't believe in Jesus you've missed the only path to heaven. Jesus is God in the flesh. You're hell-bound, too.

You gotta remember, a Chritian will tell you that Buddhist monk who finds God in everything and treats every living thing like an extension of God himself and lives a life of quiet obedeince will go to Hell on judgement day despite their actions.
So they will say you are doomed to the pit.
I think as long as you are a good person, then a happy life will await you in the afterlife, whatever that may be.
