Tithing was a requirement in the Jewish sysytem. Jesus tithed.

Christians however are not required to tithe.
Churches missapply the verses regarding generosity to keep the plates full.

Many Christians believe that tithing is no longer necessary because they were part of the Old Testament law and Christians now live under grace instead of law. For some reason, however, I cannot convince many Christians to see incest, murder, adultery, homosexuality, bestiality, and abortion the same way. Read the books of Romans and James--they clearly spell out for Christians that, although their salvation is not based on following the law, God still expects his followers to obey his commands. And one of those commands is the tithe.

Christians will also try to use II Corinthians as grounds not to tithe--the whole "God loves a cheerful giver" soliloquy (II Corinthians 9:6-15). What they don't realize is that this letter was written to the church of Corinth to rebut rumors in that church that Paul was embezzling the church's tithes. He wanted to send a clear message to them that he did not want to receive any support from them unless they were giving it out of a genuine sense of generosity, which meant that they had faith that he was spending it on the advancement of the church.

God does love a cheerful giver, and if you can give more than 10% it pleases him that much more. Personally, for any overtime I earn at work (paid at 1 1/2 base rate) I give an extra 5% for each hour of overtime--that extra goes to a separate ministry, while my base 10% goes to my church.

For those Christians who try to claim that the Old Testament doesn't apply to them any more, I ask why it is included in the Christian Bible--why don't we just have the New? We kept those laws around for a reason, and it wasn't just context to make the NT more understandable.

There's no one forcing anyone to pay a tithe. However, if you want to join certain churches, you are required to pay a tithe. If you don't like paying the tithe, why are you going to church there?

Yes I believe so much in tithes, because, when I don't know the mystery of tithes, I hardly see people favour me, but I I come to realize the good thing about tithes, (since I have been paying my tithes, don't look at it that whoever you are paying the to, just know that you are paying your tithes to God) i have been receiving financial favour and uncommon breakthroughs

I believe in tithing to either a church that you know and trust or taking the money you are giving to God and give it to the needy in a way that you know it will be used: i.e. buy a bunch of cans of food and take them to a soup kitchen.

I believe in tithing of your money, your time, your talents. There is a verse that says, "He who waters others, waters himself". To give (not out of showmanship or ritual) from the heart is such a satisfying thing and through giving to others, you realize that your needs are somehow always met.

yes...because Abraham gave 10% to Melchizedek...
Hebrews 7
Melchizedek the Priest
1This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means "king of righteousness"; then also, "king of Salem" means "king of peace." 3Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever.
