I'd like to know what is everyone's opinion of Coney Island, as I am depriving my wife of her usual Beach Holiday this year by going to NYC :-)
Is it worth going there for a day - or are there better beaches to go to ?

Coney Island has gotten better but there are better beaches to visit for a day. Go to Jones Beach on Long Island. Take the LIRR to Wantagh train station, then go downstairs and wait in front of the bicycle shop to take the bus to Jones Beach.

Summer is an ideal time to check out Coney Island, as the beaches and amusements are open. However, there are things to see and do year round, such as checking out Nathans Hot Dogs, a July 4th tradition, as they host the annual Hot Dog Eating Contest, which is broadcast on television. As stated, Astroland is being torn down, but the Landmarked Tornado wooden coaster will remain (hooray!) It's one of the oldest remaining wooden coasters, and a real thrill to ride. The entire area has been recently renovated to attract tourists, especially since the Keyspan Stadium was built. There's also an old fashioned sideshow on one of the side-streets, which was featured on the Travel Channel, it's really unique. Gargulios is really worth a trip, and is walking distance from the boardwalk. If they're still there, there's also Carolina restaurant, another great Italian eatery. In the summer, there's a huge police presence, so crime wouldn't be an issue. Just stay in the amusement and ballpark area, where the police are, and you'll be fine.

coney island is awesome and the vibe of it is nice, smells like hot dogs and has a lot of music playing at the same time. also tends to be crowded by locals on good "beach days".
BUT
it isnt the typical beach you would go to for beach "holidays"
so i recommend other beaches like jones beach

Coney Island is quite a zoo, and I wouldn't go there to go to the "beach"...but it's some of the best people watching you'll come across, and if you have a hankering for boardwalk food, you won't find any better than Nathan's Famous.

Hell yeah! I just went to Coney Island about 2 weeks ago and it was VERY CROWDED, but still, I had lots of fun!

if you got the time to go to wildwood NJ. its got a very good beach and a lot of other things to do.
Coney island is OK I guess.
