I am new to sea fishing.I get what its about just a bit(10z lead=10lb shockleader,3oz=30lb shockleader)
but,how much do you put on and is it similar to the way you put backing on a fly reel?

Yes a shock leader is about the same as connecting backing to a fly rod. There are knots that you use to connect the lines together so that they do not catch when passing through the rod eyes. a couple of examples are found at this web site

Just buy leader line. Then tie one end to a swivel and the other end to a hook. Also 10 oz lead would be a 100 lb test leader. For that you would be codfishing in deep water. The leader is to take the first hit to plant the hook deeply before the fish discovers there is a hook in the meal.
