I took my cat Rusty to the Emergency Room tonight. He is still there. They had to put him in the oxygen tank and monitor him closely, give him a chest x-ray and some steroids.
He is everything to me. I love this cat very much and there is nothing - no price too high - to save him or make him feel better.
I called the hospital back three hours later and the vet said that they don't think they are going to draw blood from him tonight because everytime he is out, he gets a bit stressed and of course they don't want to sedate him yet because of his breathing etc. He is only around 5 yrs old, he is a larger cat, not huge, but he needs to lose some weight.
I am worried though, because when I brought him in, he did have a fever, which is why they wanted bloodwork to rule anything else out. His chest x-rays point to asthma though.
How are they gonna be able to get blood, (if they try at all again)?
Im worried i just don't want them to stress him anymore, but I think he needs it done

I mean, he is in their care at this moment and doing better, but they recommended to transport him to another vet in the morning, but I am worried, like what will they have to do if he gets stressed again... how to draw the blood etc.. I am super scared I don't want to lose him. I don't want to push him too far.

I am so sorry! I hope your kitty gets better.

My cat freaks out when they try to draw blood from her paws. This last time at the vet after trying to get blood from both paws they shaved her neck and took it from the jugular. She did not struggle or freak out at all. Plus, because this vein is bigger it takes a lot less time to draw blood.

When they are drawing the blood I would try to stay near your kitty and keep talking to him. Your voice may help him calm down.

Hope he feels better soon!

Stop worrying. Animals can sense when their owners are stressed.
Calm yourself down and go visit him. Like the other posters said your presence and a reassuring stroke can make a world of difference.
It will help if you bring an unwashed toy or a towel from home with you, something that smells of home he can cuddle for the night.

My cat hates doctors. However, he calmly accepts them to take blood from him under 2 conditions:
1. I am there holding him and kissing him, he trusts me so he is not so scared.
2. He wears an E-collar (cone), and they take the blood from the vein on his throat, so he can't see what they are doing. He just feels a light pain, but my presence there reassures him.
Good luck to your kitty. Ask the vets if they can accept that you be there while they try, so that the cat is not so stressed.

like it has been said already, even healthy cats get very stressed during blood draws. So it is not wise to draw blood if the cat is having difficulty breathing. They will wait till he stabalizes then get it.
