My mom's husband, who is a preacher, insists on repeating the phrase "Knowledge is ignorance" in opposition to scientific research and findings and talks about man leaning on his own understanding. Why are members of the scientific community accused of "Leaning on their own understanding" when, in fact, their experiments are intended to thoroughly challenge their own theories, speculations, and beliefs even beyond the 5 naked senses? Meanwhile, religious devotees proclaim to have all the answers which exempts them from researching outside the parameters of the understanding upon which they lean. Historically, people had believed that the world was flat, the sun revolved around the earth, our solar system was the center of the universe, and natural calamities were often caused by witchcraft or magic. If one chooses to find truth in this doctrine, could it possibly be interpreted to address the people of that time period or perhaps man's initial perception prior to real knowledge?

Actually I agree with much you have to say.
The proofs of Christianity are beyond the scripture; but the Bible is being increasingly validated by disciplines of science as time progresses.
The historical records are being corroborated by the archaeological and geologic records and the artifacts and places as well as the content of the chalk formed in the Cretaceous period which was raised up by the Cenozoic strata do not lie.

"Where did this scar on my chin come from?" Is the answer to that in the Bible? Yet there is a scar on my chin, and I know exactly where it came from; it was a bicycle accident when I was 18. Do you feel more or less ignorant now that you know?
Your mom's preacher husband sounds like a complete tool. It is my study of the intricacy, complexity, variety, and interdependency of the universe and everything in it that convinced me that God did exist--it was the only rational conclusion.
Before that the Bible seemed ridiculous, but after I decided there had to be a God, I had to figure out whose "God" was closest to the truth. I had to choose to either make up my own religion or to throw in my lot with one of the established faiths.
I went through various religious texts and tried to figure out which one made the most sense. I ruled out Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, and Taoism, since I knew the universe to be finite, and an infinite God could not be one with a finite universe. I rationalized that a monotheistic faith was more likely than a polytheistic one, since even in the polytheistic there still had to be one supreme God above all the other Gods.
That left me with the Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Of the three, Christianity made the most sense, was the strongest backed by history, and had the fewest internal discrepancies.
Remember, I started this whole train by studying SCIENCE! People like your mom's husband use faith as an excuse to ignore facts; it was those very facts that convinced me that God is real--not anything in any holy book, or anything that a missionary told me.
So whether those facts line up specifically with your belief or not, those are the facts. But although they may not specifically endorse any one particular faith's version of God, they without doubt in my eyes endorse God.

I'm with vorenhutz, here. Your stepfather is saying that black is white, and is simply hoping that by repeating it often enough he can bully you into believing him.
Read some George Orwell.
Sometimes when people make counterintuitive statements like "knowledge is ignorance" there is a profound meaning behind it.
Most of the time, however, they are talking through their fundament, and their main motivation is gaining power.
A good rule of thumb is, the more often people make enigmatic statements, the more likely it is that they are a wan.ker.

I personally believe that religion is one big joke.
You pick a religion, any religion, and there are flaws in it.
Thats right, NOTHING in our world is perfect.
People are entitled to believe what they want and that is fine with me. What annoys me most though is when people push you to believe one thing and one thing only.
You think about it -- how did most of the wars in history start?
WITH CLASH OF RELIGION.
How do a lot of the present-day wars and disagreements start?
WITH CLASH OF RELIGION.
So, people, you can believe what you want... just don't go pushing it onto other people.
And science, well thats just another story. I don't think we will ever know what happened or how we got here in the first place.

It just because no one is right to each :religion and science .No one is straight forward and say oh! this is the trith, because each of their word has a pit each doesnt know .example was Einstein ,he doesnt beleive God is playing dice in the univers but sciense prove him wrong .Same through with kierkegaar he speak of a truth but find out that he failed in his life ,symply he was challenge by sciense wich make einstein wrong But both speak of the truth a truth which God only validates in each of us and not us alone

well, what did you expect from people who think the truth is contained in some heavily-edited bronze-age myths codified in a book of sorts? Your mom's husband sounds like a real piece of work.

"Knowledge is ignorance"
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
one could not find a finer example of doublethink.

seems to me a desperate attempt to pretend that the bible account is fully compatible with science. that just won't wash (flood joke?)
