I have mixed feelings on that. I do have a religion but I'm not Christian, and I don't like to force my religion on anyone who hasn't expressed an interest.

I think the people are honestly trying to help. If someone is giving this advice to someone in their own religious group, it can be a very nice thing to do.

At least it's a better answer than telling a mentally ill person to "snap out of it" or "get a life."

However, it might be terrible advice for a person who has psychosis or severe manic symptoms. Religious delusions are fairly common. Those people might go so as to think they're God or Jesus. Excessive preoccupation with religion or hyperreligiosity is something that psychiatrists make note of.

For example, I used to work for a mental health outpatient clinic. The patients were supposed to sign a form for permission to get treatment. One woman signed her name as "Cleopatra Jehovah God." I mean no offense to religious people, but I think somebody like that needs medication and it's better for her if nobody talks to her about religion until after her psychotic symptoms improve.

Many people find comfort in religion; there is even some studies that suggest that religious people improve more rapidly - maybe because they have less stress because they believe that God will take care of it. For many people, it is that anchor that they hold onto. I think, however, that one should be very cautious to ignore proven techniques for help with mental health issues because you think that God will cure you. Many christian counselors have a devastating effect on people because they do not have the right knowledge to help people; they go on a two week course and think that they can change the world. There should be a balance between religion and common sense.

No body puts wether they are religious, this makes it bettter for all people because at least then they feel that they can answer more questions, it is the way our brains work for some of us, as in, if you are religious an some isnt, then u are gonna avoid it if you are centred around religion more than anything else.....

Unfortunately, many people put their trust in so called religions and beliefs which are based on pure fiction and designed to keep the world living in a sense of fear. My philosophy is to treat other people like you would yourself, and do what you want in life as long as no body gets hurt. Unfortunately, many religious fanatics live in a world that is focused on converting the unconverted and not accepting any other way than their faith allows. It is usually called ignorance and stupidity. I often feel that they are missing out on so much in life because of their narrow minded and self-centred beliefs that are obstructing and dictating the way in which they lead their lives (however, they would say they have reached their state of Nirvana). I feel it is a sad reflection of our time and one which they choose to follow like sheep to the slaughter.

Totally agree, I'm not religious and when/if i get an answer saying god will help, pray for help etc i just find it irritating, and move on. Fine if you wanna believe in that nonsense and it helps you, but personally, i don't wanna no.

what you must remember is that people are trying to help you by using their experience in life, i guess that worked for many people, I am a Christian but i don't answer using prayer, because not everybody has the same religious beliefs. i would rather say that the universe has a plan for you.

I think people give that answer because they don't know the real answer, but they still want their 2 points.
