for self defense or street fight you can't rely on just one style to prepare you for a real life situation. You have to be prepared for the fight to end up on the ground AND/OR standing up, and not just one particular style effectively incorporates both aspects in their training. Find a school that incorporates cross training and sparring with an effective striking style (examples would be kickboxing, muay thai, karate, etc..) AND a form of grappling, should the fight end up on the ground (examples being judo, BJJ, etc...). Each style lacks something so "mix it up" and you should be prepared for anything a street fight brings your way! of course thats only if you do everything you can to AVOID THE FIGHT =) There are many schools out there that teach forms of mixed martial arts for self defense and even incorporate what to do in case weapons or multiple attackers are brought into play (however, under these circumstances, your best option would be to run your *** off!). So take some time to look online and check out a school that seems to suit you the best....heres a little website to help you get started... www.mma.tv ....hope this helps a lil bit!

You want an effective martial art. Well anything that is combative or teaching combat methods like combat karate, combat aikido or combat judo could be the best for you because they teach you how to fight directly and no nonsense instructions. Their methods is much more effective since they use less kata and uses more advance fightning techniques than other schools available. Also after mastering one style try studying one more so you could apply different techniques on different opponents.

Malcolm Camp is an idiot! How are you gonna roll around on rough concrete without any equipment?!?!?!?! What a fool! BJJ is extremely impractical in a street fight with multiple combatants also. If I were you Jim I'd just weight train and get a punching bag. Thats all I have and I bet I can kick all these "martial artists" as*es. No disrespect to real martial artists but all these fakes are really starting to piss me off.

seriously jujitsu and muaythai are both necessary for fights. but more importantly street fights can end up five on one and people bring weapons in an organised fair fight between two guys somebody is going to go to the ground either by being knocked down or by being taken down so learning how to fight on the ground will hepl you win. jujitsu is the only way to do this. but like i said many fights include multiple fighters or attackers or weapons so learning how to sprint would be a great way of avoiding it. seriously no martial art not even mma or guns will help you survive on the street. staying out of trouble is the only way

No martial art will guarantee you a victory but Muay Thai Boxing will come damned close!

It is a brutal style and is similar to street fighting in many ways.

Take some Muay Thai lessons and get some Bas Rutten dvds. Brazilian Jujitsu can also come in handy, but going to the ground in a street fight is usually a bad idea... especially with multiple assailants. Seriously check out the Bas Rutten stuff. there are vids on youtube of him.

Krav Maga is the best fighting style especially for the streets.
Go to en.wikipedia.com and search for krav maga, scroll down to modern usage and you will see that the military and FBI even use it.
As prove, why don't FBI use the famous TKD and all the great known martial arts you see in competitions and TV.

without a doubt what you want is wingchun kungfu its a short range combat system 70 percent hand techniques and 30 percent legs the legs are used to the opponents lower body and also used to defend against kicks, there are no high kicks in the system such as kicking to the head because its deemed impractical when your hands are closer to your opponents head its economical with its structure and techniques and is known as "the street fighting of hongkong" its the best system ive ever done and i think its superior as well as it doest waste motion and train unecessary movements which would be impractical for the street also thai boxing is another favourite of mine thats also easily learned and very effective with nice elbow and knee techniques id suggest you check these two out avoid the arts with white suits

kick boxing isn't the most beneficial but is one of the quickest
& it should be all you need unless someone knows a martial art & desides to fight you

basically its up to you to deside because the other martial artists and I could go back & forth on this for forever check out martial arts lists on google and go to the web site that has a guys name that starts w/ Do

Learn ground fighting so his buddys can put the boots to you while you are on the ground

Learn TKD and believe the fantasy that fights start at tournament range and he wont be able to close in if it does

Believe the GRACIE bull that 90% of fights end up on the ground (actually according to studys by police and security and emergency room records it's about 25/30%)

A street fight usually involves a close in sucker shot followed by a flurry of blows that keep you on defense .IT'S OVER QUICK .TO WIN YOU MUST GO TO ATTACK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

To get answers for martial arts and self defense go here

http://www.koryu-uchinadi.com/

It run by 8th and 9th dan masters with authentic teaching liscences from the JAPANESE BUDO KAN.

You will see and learn just how far modern martial arts has strayed from the original idea.
