"Turning unto Him (only); and be careful of your duty unto Him and establish worship, and be not of those who ascribe partners (unto Him); - Of those who split up their religion and became schismatics, each sect exulting in its tenets." (The Romans - Verses 30 - 31)

Can we safely assume from these verses that dividing ourselves into sects is Shirk?

Javed I:

Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم and Omar رضي الله عنه were discussing.. none of them killed the other or declared he's - God forbid - Kafir; like Muslim sects do to each other... We need to Focus on the problem to solve it.. if not in our life, may be for our children to live together in love and peace...

Brother Ishfaq; let's not generalize.. There are also Sunni people who think that the Quran is incomplete as it is missing a verse.. Look:
- Musnad Ibn Hanbal - Vol 5; and Al Bukhari (3/1604 ) - Also Look Imam Al Salaf Ibn AL Qayem Al Juzee (Al Fauaed - The Benefits)...

If we were Just Muslims upon the Monothiesm of Ibrahim and the Quran and The Sunna.. nothing of this would have happened.. and nothing of this would have been written.

From the Lebanon; Well said.. by The way.. I realize both Shia and Sunna as misleaded.. Sorry.. But you people gave yourself names other than the names God called you: "He Hath called you Muslims" (Fullstopt!)... We wont restore golden age again unless we became just Muslims... Upon the quran and The Sunna.. Sunna "hadiths" from Al Kafi, Al Bukhari, From anywhere...

Ultimately division in itself is what the Almighty has made, in the sense that all of us hold different spiritual stations during life even within the same sect. All of us differ even in the same sect in our obedience, understanding or execution of the Grand Laws of the Almighty in our lives.

Additionally.....

No Muslim from any extraction believes they are not following the Quran, the Sunnah or the Commands of Allah as ordered through our Prophet.

The divisions came about in the matters of history. When people put other than the Allah, Prophet, the Quran and the Sunnah as their criteria, then and only then divisions came about.

Even the companions of the Prophet fought with each other and killed each other. What do you say about them? Muwaviah and Ali fought in the battle of Siffeen in which a lot of Muslims lost their lives. Ayesha and Ali also fought in the Battle of Jamal in which at least nine hundred companions lost their lives on both sides.

When people abandon the Sunnah of the Prophet, THEN the foundation for fighting and conflict is laid. You must admit that all Muslims are united about Allah, The Prophet, The Quran, The Sunnah of the Prophet, after which all Muslims are united on Ali (who all Muslims in all sects give great respect and follow him and consider him to be a man of great merit), Muslims are also united about Hasan the grandson of the Prophet as well as Husain.

All others are controversial and there is no unity in the Ummah except on those listed above. So you tell me where unity lies and where division lies and make up your mind.

There are also divisions between the Shia and Sunni, and within Shia and Sunni. The key is to emphasize the Prophet and those who are common to all.

When the Prophet said there will be only forty Muslims left in the World when the Mahdi will arrive, I used to think how is that possible, although I believe that will happen one day. I can see how. Now Muslims in all sects are focussing on division rather than commonality.

United we stand. Divided we fall as we should. May the Almighty unite the Muslims and stop the dividers from their mischief in their very tracks. Ameen.

Actually Lawrence, I do believe this is Shirk but I do not say it is because I might be wrong. But my question is: What's the difference between us Muslims & other Godly religions (Judiasm & Christianity)? Their religion is different & wrong because their books have been changed by man & now there are different sections. For example in Christianity, you have the Orthdox, Protestants .... etc. But now we as Muslims also have Sunni & Shia! What's the difference. And no, don't tell me that all Sunni & Shias are brothers and love each other dearly. See what is happening in Iran & Iraq! Problems are happening in other countries also that the world is not fully aware of. These are not characteristics of Muslims, that's why I think it is Shirk. There was none of this in the days of our beloved Muhammad (PBUH). May Allah touch all our hearts & unite us before the end of time. Amen

Anne, this is the hadith which speaks about sects. Prophet Mohammed's(PBUH) community will be divided into 73
Dawud :: Book 40 : Hadith 4579
Narrated AbuHurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: The Jews were split up into seventy-one or seventy-two sects; and the Christians were split up into seventy one or seventy-two sects; and my community will be split up into seventy-three sects.

Bukhari :: Book 4 :: Volume 56 :: Hadith 803
Narrated Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman:
Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) said, "Adhere to the group of Muslims and their Chief." I asked, "If there is neither a group (of Muslims) nor a chief (what shall I do)?" He said, "Keep away from all those different sects, even if you had to bite (i.e. eat) the root of a tree, till you meet Allah while you are still in that state."

Brother you know how i feel about this subject, if Sunni believe in one God and Muhammad is the last messenger of God, and the Quran has not been altered then i have no problem with them.

EDIT: When you say you people do you mean shia or sunni or both, when we say shia we mean shia of Ali were the true sunnah and hadith of the prophet is, all our hadith and sunnah comes from directly from the prophet Shia means party, we are Muslims first and shia second.

If any muslim believes that Allah is one and Prophet (P.B.U.H & his family) is the last prophet. The day of Last Judgement is real, Life after death is real, Angels are real, Books sent by Allah to the prophets are real and whoever respects the holy Prophet (P.B.U.H & H. F) and his holy family, and whoever believes on all the basic concepts of Islam and follow the Islamic rules such as Salat, fast etc .......I have no problem with that muslim and I respect him.

Shia & Sunnis should respect each other and just follow this ayat of Holy Quran in this matter.

6. To you be your way, and to me mine. (Surah Al-Kaafiruun, Ayat 6)

Allah will judge, who is right & wrong at the day of the Last Judgement.

Shirk is not supported a bit. That is the greatest sin of all. But we shouldn't generalize a people as people of Shirk. There are 'Shirk practices whereever there is ignorance and in all sects.' The truth is that when Thauheed comes Shirk disappears. When light comes Darkness gets lost. When Knowledge comes, ignorance disappears. So a Muslims duty is to spread Thauheed, Knowledge, Light. The last part will automatically gets lost sooner or later.
And say: "Truth has (now) arrived and Falsehood perished: for Falsehood is (by its nature) bound to perish." (Holy Quran:17:81)

Yes the nature of falsehood is to persish. But a falsehood will never perish with another falsehood but only with truth.
Prophet (PBUH) didn't come all at once to break all the idols and so many Shirks that existed in Makkah. He preached the messgae of Thauheed, Knowledge and light of Allah in the hearts of people all the evil things disappeard step by step in a short time. Nowadays I see many people fighting against the later parts of Shirk, Ignorance and darkness to waste their time and to create more divisions and enemity within Muslims. That is not the solution to the problems and the way. Allah has shown us a way to solve the falsehood through His messengers. Only through that way will things be corrected and solved.

To Red Dragon and Lawrence

No, it is not shirk. If different branches have differences, they also have a lot of common. For as long as we believe that true God is Allah and Muhammad (SAW) was his true last messenger, we can't be doing shirk.

Differences are human nature. Even in each sect (and even within that one sect which is supposed to be correct) different people will have difference of opinion. So equating differences with shirk will make us all MUSHRIK.

Did not Prophet (SAW) and Hazrat Umar had different opinions for the POWs after BADR?

My request is, please focus on commonalities.

It is a truth and psychological principle, scientifically proven, that what you focus at will manifest.

You focus at differences, they will amplify.
You focus at hate, there will be more hate.
You focus at war, there will be wars.

Let us not critise and focus on differences. Let us focus on loiving together, respecting each other and praying to Allah that we all be shown the right path. Yes, we all, including "me" be shown the right path.

Listen to all this crap, gods, days of judgment... do you people listen to yourselves endorsing this little man in the sky that punishes us at his whim.
Religion is the bane of man's existence. If war was waged on theists, upon their termination and deprogramming ALL wars would cease and the average IQ of the world would shoot up like 190 points.
Please people, have faith in god to save you, find a tall structure and make sure you go in head first. It's for the betterment of God's creation that you aren't here hating everyone and causing wars.

I strongly support Javed who said it is not shirk... SHIRK means do not accept one of the 6 faith's musts wholly. Commonities are our union points.
please read this...
Now the only remedy for the critical consequences of this awesome state consists of Nine Commands:

1. To act positively, that is, out of love for one’s own outlook, avoiding enmity for other outlooks, not criticizing them, interfering in their beliefs and sciences, or in any way concerning oneself with them.

2. To unite within the fold of Islam, irrespective of particular outlook, remembering those numerous ties of unity that evoke love, brotherhood and concord.

3. To adopt the just rule of conduct that the follower of any right outlook has the right to say, “My outlook is true, or the best,” but not that “My outlook alone is true,” or that “My outlook alone is good,” thus implying the falsity or repugnance of all other outlooks.

4. To consider that union with the people of truth is a cause of Divine succour and the high dignity of religion.

5. To realize that the individual resistance of the most powerful person against the attacks through its genius of the mighty collective force of the people of misguidance and falsehood, which arises from their solidarity, will inevitably be defeated, and through the union of the people of truth, to create a joint and collective force also, in order to preserve justice and right in the face of that fearsome collective force of misguidance.

6. In order to preserve truth from the assaults of falsehood,

7. To abandon the self and its egoism,

8. And give up the mistaken concept of self-pride,

9. And cease from all insignificant feelings aroused by rivalry.

If this ninefold rule is adhered to, sincerity will be preserved and its function perfectly performed.
