Does a dogs behavior change while she is having her cycle? I have a seven month old great dane and I am pretty sure she is about to start her cycle. But she has been acting differently, like she has been sleeping a lot more and doesn't play as much, is this normal?

Your dog will probably be a bit more tired and not want to play as much. She will also probably do her best to get outside to find a male to mate with. Keep her in except when YOU take her out to potty, on a leash only. Male dogs can smell a female in heat for up to 5 miles away and will do whatever they need to in order to mate with her.
I would recommend getting her spayed. Most vets won't do it when they are in heat because it is dangerous for the dog due to the blood in the uterus and it can cause them to hemmorage.
Having her spayed will also lessen her chance of developing mammary or ovarian cancer.
She may also be a bit more moody and less interested in you because she wants to mate. She may whine or bark a lot more. This is how they "call" to the males. Her appetite may not be that great either. Just continue her normal diet and she will soon be back to her regular self.
So, keep her inside except for supervised potty breaks. Get her spayed as soon as her heat is over. It usually lasts around 3 weeks.
You will also want to either get her one of the female undergarments made for dogs or put down an old towel or blanket to protect the surface that she lays on most. She will also probably lick herself quite a bit to "clean" herself. This is normal even though it sounds pretty nasty.
Good Luck

I know that everyone has said that they act differently, I just asked my vet how I could tell that my seven month old lab/pit mix has gone into heat yet. He told me that yes she has definitely has gone into her first heat at her age but , some dogs have a "silent heat" There are absolutely no symptoms. As she gets older it will become more obvious. He also said that by spaying her before she goes into her first heat I am decreasing her chances of getting ovarian cancer & other types of female cancers by 98%. So even if she has had no symptoms, please spay or nueter your animals. These statisics also go for male dogs .

Do women change when they are having their cycle? Sorry, the men won't answer that as they know the consequences of upsetting a woman at that time of the month LOL All animals change when on heat. And your description of the dog is not unlike a woman, sleeping a lot, doesn't want to play etc. I bet she bites and barks a lot as well LOL

How about getting her spayed so you don't have to find out - getting a dog spayed before her first heat cycle gives her a 75% chance (possibly higher) of avoiding mammary cancer in the future, and a 100% chance of avoiding pyometra, ovarian and uterine cancer.

Hi,
I have a female toy poodle, and have had a female german shepherd in the past. I noticed they're a bit moody when on heat - ie can be a bit snappy, more lethargic at times aswell. My poodles appetite increased aswell a bit, and you will notice a lot of extra licking. You'll definately notice when it starts - its pretty hard to miss (not sure what content is allowed here so I will try and explain this in very innocent terms) there will be a noticeable swelling.

Yes, most bitches do act somewhat different when heat cycle is on. e.g. less active (like yours), less appetite, look moody. etc.
Do not be alarmed and try not to fuss about it. It will go away.
Also, do get her spayed. Bitches not spayed tend to get womb infection at old age and some other womb related issues.

From what I know, she may be sleeping more because it is tired from running around, puppies can run themselves down quite easily. Also if she is not dewormed it will make her excessively tired.
Female dogs do act differently while in heat. They tend to shake their rear ends more.

She is a domestic dog. doggies try this. they're style of like human toddlers. they're going to run around grab issues and in simple terms play all the time. they do no longer understand something and that they believe something they could get their eyes on is properly worth chewing. finally whilst they lose interest and drained, they're going to easily lay there and be calm. yet then they're going to act up lower back and that they're going to initiate appearing loopy. My canines is two and a a million/2 and he nonetheless grabs slippers, paper, and stuff. in simple terms no longer just about as lots and as generally than whilst he replaced into youthful. he's greater laid lower back and calm. He listens greater too. in simple terms keep guidance your canines. practice her to be greater obedient. practice her NOW, with the aid of fact the faster you initiate the greater appropriate experienced and the greater appropriate they're going to act whilst they're older. as much as i admire my canines i had to kill him just about familiar whilst he replaced right into a domestic dog. He pooped in my abode a minimum of 20, specific 20 circumstances, he's chewed countless shoes and papers, and he's bitten all human beings's feet. yet we saved guidance him and he's lots greater mature now. nonetheless likes to play and run around and stuff yet he's lots greater calm and mature than in the previous.
