I'd definitely agree with Bournemouth! Also try Boscombe and Southbourne. From Bournemouth, through Boscombe, through Southbourne and up to Hengistbury Head, the beach is absolutely wonderful. However, Bournemouth's beaches ( Spa Road / Bournemouth Pier) can get absolutely packed. Boscombe's beaches can get busy but not as busy as Bournemouth and Southbourne's beaches are quiet. You will find accomodation etc. is cheaper in Boscombe and Southbourne than Bournemouth and yet Central Bournemouth is only a 15 minute bus ride from Southbourne via Boscombe. On Friday nights, during the school holidays, there are fireworks. The best views are from the Boscombe direction. I would avoid Lulworth Cove and that area as Lulworth cove is not beachy (sandy) it is gravelly (stoney) and getting there means crossing a Military firing range and there are no facilities, entertainment or accomodation. Lulworth is only OK for a one day trip to do some fishing. As for Swanage, it also lacks facilities but it does have a popular nudist beach, doesn't it Carolina? LOL

Poole. I've just come back from there. Miles of soft sand. Sheltered so not windy at all on the day I was there. Clean and spacious public toilets. Nice beach cafes but they are expensive. Parking in the Pay & Display car park next to the beach cost me £3 for 2 hours; I forget how much it costs for a day ticket. People leave their shoes lined up on the pavement which runs along the top of the beach and, amazingly, nobody touches them. A funny site to see all those hundreds of pairs of shoes lined up.

Norfolk, somewhere like Blakeney, though i'd book early, there are many surrounding villages like Wells-Next-Sea, where there are long sandy beaches. And the good thing at Blakeney is you can go seal watching, all along that coastline is beautiful. And we have been in the summer and its not packed to the gunnels, so you can set up your kids with bucket and spades, parasol and picnic and have a wander at leisure. There are plenty of bigger towns also with wonderful beaches like Cromer, Great Yarmouth, which have more to do in the evening.

As a child, my favoourite beaches were the ones at St.Ives, Cornwall, and Weymouth. As a change from the sand beach in Weymouth itself, we would drive up to Portland where I enjoyed playing in the rock pools.
There is plenty to do in both resorts, although St. Ives remains my favourite - and good day trips to places like Penzance (perhaps over the the Isles of Scilly by boat) and Mousehole.

Weymouth is a very good beach. It's really sandy and you can walk out really really far coz it doesn't get very deep!
There are shops, arcades, restaurants, play areas for kids. It's quite good for children!
