I've changed my diet from reducing calories to eating quite a bit, a lot of protein though. I've been weight training and I wanted to know if this helps my fat loss or will it just make me regain the 30lbs ive already lost from restricting calories and cardio

Weights. The more muscle your body has, the more calories your body burns, even at rest. Many people are afraid of getting huge due to weight lifting. This is meaningless. You will NOT gain a lot of mass if you're not taking in a lot of calories as well. Also keep in mind that most of the huge people you see on TV or in print achieve that state by going on high protein and high carb diets. They increase their calorie intake specifically to bulk up. So the fear of bulking up should NOT be a reason to not lift weights. As a rule of thumb, the larger the muscle the more energy it will burn to sustain itself. Therefore the most effective muscle groups to work for fat loss are large muscle groups: thighs and hamstrings, the back, and the chest. You can also lift your body weight without going to a gym, through push ups, sit ups, chin ups, etc.

Weight Loss Facts:

Low Fat Foods DON'T WORK.

You cannot lose weight using Low Fat Diets. Low fat foods have been popular for more than 15 years, but yet our society is getting more overweight as each year passes. This fact alone should tell you that eating a purely low fat menu is not the answer to losing weight.

Low Calorie Diets DON'T WORK.

You won't lose weight using a Low Calorie Dieting Plan either. In fact, eating low calories is the worst thing that you can do to your body, since that will only slow down your body's fat burning engine and ruin all chances of losing weight (low calorie diets may allow a few pounds of weight loss for the first few days, but then after that all weight loss comes to a halt --- known as a dieting plateau). You can never get slim by starving yourself.

Low Carb Plans DON'T WORK.

You'll probably find it extremely difficult to get slim using a Low Carb Dieting Plan. Low carb diets have recently become popular over the last couple years, but the problem with low carb menus is that they are too strict and TOO HARD TO FOLLOW for average people. Low carb menus tend to rob your body of too much energy (carbohydrates) and make it nearly impossible to remain on the program for very long. This is why so many dieters find it difficult to follow a strict low carbohydrate menu.

What about Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig Dieting Plans?

Weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers (and Jenny Craig) usually involve slower dieting progress over a longer period of time, since such programs generally promise only 2-3 pounds of weight loss per week. Also, programs such as Jenny Craig usually involve buying special meals and/or dietary supplements during the initial phases of the program. While some people may like these types of dietary programs, we prefer a dieting plan which focuses on faster weight loss, such as the Accelerated Fat Burning Program shown below...

Well, muscle weighs more than fat, but the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn when you exercise.

I would say that, at first, you will stay the same weight (or even gain a few pounds) but you will notice your body changing, because you will be losing fat, and gaining muscle. Eventually (if you stick with it for several weeks or longer), you will lose more weight.

The human animal is designed to take in food in small amounts constantly the body stores fat if it thinks the next meal might be some time in coming. Muscle burns fat as fuel, as long as you eat regularly, 5 to 6 times a day, and drink plenty of water in addition to your workout you might gain weight but it will be muscle weight. Most people lose confidence in their workouts when they hit the point they start gaining muscle mass and some of the weight comes back. Rest assured that if you are working out properly and building muscle as well as doing plenty of cardio, you will not gain fat even if you gain weight.

Strength training builds muscle. Muscle burns fat. So yes it will help you burn fat. *But* you should also do cardio to burn fat and don't over do the calories either. It's a balancing act to make sure you maintain/reduce your body fat%, build your muscle, etc.

Good luck!

Yes, increased muscle mass will consume more calories, therefore (slowly) causing you to lose fat, assuming you are intaking the same amount of calories now as you did before the muscle increase.
