Ok im going out of state on a 24 hour drive with my 2 year old son and my parents. We are going to the family reunion and my hubby cant go :( but any way we are leaving on Wednesday I want to know if anyone has any suggestions of things to take or do on the trip. Anything you wish you had or couldn’t have lived without. We will be staying with family. My son has sleeping trouble even at home. We will stop once overnight each way. I have a special toy for the trip and a car DVD player im going to take his blanket and teddy bear he sleeps with at home and his story books.

Hi. My hubby's family is 22-24 hours away and we make the drive twice a year. We just went in June and our son is currently 2 (almost 2 1/2 now). Everything you have listed sounds great! I couldn't have made the drive w/o the DVD player. We bought him several new movies, especially for the trip, but still heard the Cars movie over and over and over again, lol. Another thing that helped.... we left around 8PM and drove all night- so, our son slept most of the way there. We didn't do that on the way back. Instead, we stopped 1/2 way and got a hotel. I think that driving all night seemed to work better though- for us anyway. Don't forget the ice chest with drinks and snacks. Oh, another thing that helped... I went to the Dollar store and bought a few new toys for him. I hid them and would pull one out when he started fussing. Good luck!

I have done more then my share of trips like that with little ones. Cooler with milk, water, juice boxes. Snacks that he likes. small thing of dish soap and a bottle scrubber in a zip lock bag kept in the diaper bag, for washing sippy cups when you stop. Keep your camera with you. Bags to put garbage in plastic grocery bags work the best. Sounds like you have everything else you will need, mine always sleep for the most part.
Oh and crayons in a car in summer, is not a good thing. In the time it takes to stop and eat, they will melt! Then you have a big mess to clean up or a waste of money for something you have to throw away.

Have a cooler with milk. Have both entertaining and soothing music cd's. Have dvds & a portable dvd player or use a laptop out of baby reach. Plug it into the cig lighter. Have books, crayons, and paper. Don't forget extra diapers & clothes. Get baby (swimmer type) ear plugs for the baby & adult plugs for the others. Have something to shade the baby's eyes for sleeping in the day. Also, use a carseat that's easy to sleep in.

Give him some tylenol or benadryl to calm him (be sure to take this with you too). Bring some pads of paper and a pencil or pen if he likes to scribble. Take him shopping and tell him to pick something out for the car ride (a small toy). Bring lots of snacks! In addition to crackers, healthy stuff, bring snacks that last a while (suckers, etc). The one great thing you have going for you is that grandpa and grandma will be with you, so he will be on good behavior. Make up games, show him stuff on the way (even if it's just a cow). I have a 5, 3, and 2 year old boys, so I understand! I wish you the best of luck! Happy and safe driving!

Crayola Color Wonder pens & paper

Sticker books

Read/sing along DVD's with corolating books

Dollar store toys wrapped up like presents, to be given every so many miles if their behavior is acceptable. (They go nuts for that one.)

Cheap disposable cameras, so they can take their own "vacation pictures" in the car.

Lots of finger snacks. Grapes, cherrios, rasins, nuts, pretzels. Anything that's not going to make a gigantic mess.

Of course as many books as you can cram into your car.

Oh, and don't forget the dramamine. You never know who will get carsick.

Good luck!

MY husband and I got our son a magnetic activity book for use in the car for road trips. It has cars, stop signs, buses, etc. There are different magnetic books that are available.

Dont worry about the sleeping bit.....all kids end up sleeping on long trips...think the car motion lulls them.....make sure you got some pediatric car sickness medication ..just incase he is one of those kids that gets car sickness which could lead to irritability..... mabe try to raise his car seat a little so that he can see out the window but only on quiet roads where the chance of an accident are minimul
