I think it means that they are either with you in spirit or in their heart.
I also believe that our loved ones even our pets who have passed on can visit us in our dreams.
My beloved Honey visits me from time to time.
Even though she was only a cat she was for 6 years the absolute love of my life.
It's been 6 years since I last saw her alive and I still miss her to this day.
How can we forget those who leave such a lasting impression in our hearts?

Could be a place memory, where one aspect of that person is lingering. Or it could be a trigger in your brain that somehow makes you smell that person when they are not there - some sort of unconscious memory thing.

Maybe they left there socks last time they were over. Or it could be a ghost if the person has passed.

I'm not quite sure why or what ,but I have had similar events! usually I give that person a ring just to make sure that he/she is OK!

It probably means you touched or rubbed up against them somewhere where they directly sprayed their cologne.
