There are ways to train a pet out of separation anxiety. Leave for a period. Start off for a few minutes and gradually increase the time, once she gets used to the fact that you will always come home she will get better.
At 10 months she is still a little one and deserves a bit longer to grow up and settle in. Things should get better. She is probably also picking up on the fact that you are stressed and this is making her worse. My mother did this with her Shitzu.
Get her a play mate or take her out with you to play with other dogs and children, socialise.
If she is causing you a lot of stress and you can't cope it may be better to try and find your puppy a new home.

I would see about getting her another home with another dog to help keep her company.
If she is getting on your nerves - it could develop where you just resent her and all of the stress that she is causing.
Please, please check out each home for a good fenced yard, make sure that if the other people have a dog that the two of them would get along and how long they have had their dog ( I would not want to give the dog to anyone who don't have dogs for a long time) talk to the persons vet about the care that they give their dog. Also see how she reacts to each of the people that you interview. She will know who she likes and trusts. Another thing - if you find someone you want to have her - make them agree to be able to see her occasionally - just so you can see that she has bonded with the people and is happy in her new surroundings.
Don't just "give" her away either - charge something for her to cover her shots, spaying, etc. To me if some one is willing to pay for a dog they are more likely to take better care of it than if she is given away for free.
Good luck with whatever you decide. It will be hard, but you are trying to do wha is best for her.

I know what that is like with dogs, only i have much bigger dogs. I have 4 german shepherds that used to be like that. What I had done is I had started to leave them alone one at a time by their selves and waited about a half a hour, then when I had come back in the doors, I would give the dog a treat and tell them that it is ok, I would not be long when I went out and they they are a good dog. That is how I broke my dogs of this. That is if you would really like to keep your dog.

Google the Internet for Maltese and/or Shitzu Rescue Groups in your area -- they may take your dog and find a good home for her.
Or if no specificbreed rescue groups, just try your local Animal Lovers group. If you can't find info on-line, ask youtr dog's vet for the names of various pet rescue groups.
However, before you go that drastic route, ask your vet for advice -- most often dogs calm down after awhile. Have you tried putting your dog in one of those molded crates (like the airlines require) with her favorite toys, plush mat inside, etc.
Sometimes the security of that kind of crate reminds them of their mother's womb and calms them down. A simple solutiom like that would greatly improve the "atmosphere" in your house and allow you to keep your "little girl".

Your pup is young, get her a good home, she'll manage the change easily. DP is right, dogs do take a lot of commitment. It's okay to find that you just don't have the time she needs. It's NOT okay to NOT care. You do. So either take her to a rescue or find a good home for her.

If you are serious and want to keep her, have a talk with your vet.
A round of very mild sedatives along with aversion therapy might do the trick as long as you are strongly commited to following the program.
