I'm talking before internet. And computers. And iPods. And cell phones. And Gameboys. I've been swallowed by a raging sea of electronics and I want to find other ways to spend my time...

Back in the 80s, we would just ride around on our bikes till our parents chased us down after dark and made us come home. Then we would sneak back out again and run around some more. Then when we got old enough to drive it was cars. Us guys would work on our cars all day so we could drive them the next day, then they probably would break down again the day after that! All the time trying to impress the girls with our ragedy rides.
We would go to the malls alot of course like kids do today, only back then it was gamerooms for video games. Coin operated video games were popular back then, more popular than home games. Video gamerooms were the place to go to meet girls and for girls to meet guys. Just go, 5 bucks worth of quarters 5 more bucks for food and you could play games all day and hang out with friends.
And of course sports were a big thing. High school sports - summer sports such as little league or whatever. Or just running around riding bikes, climbing hills or exploring wooded areas or even abandoned buildings. Kids today dont play enough sports.
Really, i dont see a whole lot different in the things that we did in the 80s as far as today. Alot of things are, some things arent.
In ways kids today have more freedom, in other ways we had more freedom in my days.

We played outside most of the time. Games like Tag, Dr. Tingle Tangle, Statue Maker, All Out War (teams of hide and go seek) rode bikes, climbed trees, just sat around and talked. Not much TV even back when I was a kid. Had one TV on top of the other for sound and picture....LOL!! Both black and white. We could actually play outside at night and not worry about it in our neighborhood. It was great fun and I miss those days. But I sure do love the technology of today. I was around when scotch tape was invented, the first ink pens were made and was home from school the day President Kennedy was assassinated. Very sad. Gasoline was 28 cents per gallon and when we got older, we could ride around all night for $5....those were the good old days.

Back in the day .... I spent a LOT more time outside and a LOT more time with real friends (vs. virtual friends). I still read books, and I always have. It is so easy to get swallowed by the raging sea of electronics, as you so aptly put it.

In the seventies we rode in cars with boys, went to the movies, swimming, camping, tramping, boating, went to the mall, ice-cream parlour, drag races, sports games, played hide- and-seek in the dark, had friends stay over, played 'spin the bottle', went for lots of walks [ looking for talent] went for picnics, to the zoo, shopping, read books, sun-bathed, especially if there were any boys around, talked on the phone, went exploring over hills and along river beds, and fat people were few and far between.

When I was younger I used to spend TONS of time outside with my friends. We would bike ride until it got too dark to see. We would play outside in the sprinklers, go swimming in the pool, find the nearest ice cream parlor and just pig out on our favorite treat :) I also spent a lot of time reading books, writing poetry, and I particularly enjoyed making movies with my friends. We'd all get together and write scripts together and film them on this old HUGE video camera, tons of fun! Bouncing outside on the trampoline was a blast, camping out in the backyard, cooking s'mores in the fire pit, and running around catching fireflies. I loved playing with my walkie talkies - we'd see how far our friends could go until we couldn't hear them anymore! I would blast my old cassette tapes and roller skate around the block. I built a treehouse in my backyard at one point. Going to the playground, playing softball with the neighbors - I miss the good ol' days

read, play a board game with friends, or put a blanket out in
the lawn and watch the stars. My parents used to go to a beach, build a fire and just hang out with friends.
