DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT.

WHEN WAS MAKING MY DECISION I WENT WIT AN ORDINARY MUSTANG GT, PULLED THE 4.6 OUT AND BUILT IT STRONGER AND FASTER.

NOW MY GT IS MAKING 905HP AND 937TORQUE (ALL AT THE CRANK)

BUT BETTER THAN COBRA, SALEEN, ROUSH AND EVEN SUPERSNAKE.

The ford gt supercar is the top ford car if that is the one your are asking about. If you are comparing the mustang gt, mustang cobra and mustang saleen then the cobra is the best for my wants but as explained later, might not be the best for everyones wants. The last year all 3 models where made was 2004 ( whether or not "we" consider the 2007 shelby gt 500 to be a cobra or not is another question for another time) so I will compare the 2004 model of each. The mustang gt is the base v8 mustang so its engine, hp, tq, suspension, transmission, and interior/exterior are all below the cobras or saleens. That leaves us to compare the 2004 cobra to the 2004 saleen. The exterior looks and interior quality/looks are personal opinion. I like the cobra exterior better because it looks more like a muscle car while the saleen looks more like a "to fast to furious" car. I believe both cars come with the same interior options as far as 6 disc cd, 6 or 8 point (I dont know the exact number) speakers, and so on. The seats and dash board look different though. As far as engine, transmission, hp, tq, and suspension goes, the cobra is superior in every single catagory except for suspension where the saleens suspension is superior to almost any vehical on the road. The cobra come with a eaton supercharged 4 valve per cylinder (32 valve) v8 engine that comes stock as a bulit engine meaning it has all forged internal parts and is capable of handling 800-1000hp in stock form. It is also hand built by 2 svt mechanics who sign the completed engine. The saleens engine is a saleen supercharged 2 valve per cylinder (16 valve) v8 engine and is not a built engine and has no forged internal parts. So the saleen engine is only capable of 500-550hp. It is not a hand built engine, it is the same engine found in the mustang gt's with a few minor differences. The factory hp and tq of the cobras is 390hp and 390 tq but it is common knowlege that the real hp and tq of the cobra is much closer to 430hp and 430 tq. The 2004 saleen has a factory rating of 375hp and 375tq, I could not find any literature and havent heard from anyone that the saleens where underrated at all. See website below for confirmation on hp, tq and engine information.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang_SVT_Cobra
As far as transmission goes, the cobra also has a much better transmission. The stock cobra transmission is the 6 speed Tremec T-56, the same bullet proof transmission that is found in the dodge vipers. The saleens come with the same 5 speed transmission that comes in the gt mustangs which I think is the T45. I think the saleens may have bigger brakes then the cobras, I know both vehicals have top of the line brakes but I believe the saleens brakes are a little bigger. To be honest, I didnt feel like taking the time necassary to reaserch the brakes after doing all the research on the other components but I am 95% sure that the saleen does have bigger brakes.
Even compared to the 2005 and newer saleens I consider the cobra to be a better vehical due to the fact the cobra comes stock with a built engine with a cast iron block. Even the saleens of today are only a 3 valve per cylinder engine that do not have any forged internals and are only capapble of handling 550-600hp. I guess in the end it comes down to what you are looking for, if you want a mustang for straight line speed and power, then the cobra is the best choice. If you want a mustang for modern looks and that can do circles around a cobra on a curvey road corse, then the saleen and its superior suspension and brakes are for you.
If you want to throw the shelby gt 500 into the mix, if you can get one for M.S.R.P, it would be my personal best choice. It comes with a built 4 valve per cylinder engine with forged internals just like the 04 cobras, but it has the advantage of have a bigger engine and bigger supercharger then the 04 cobras. The 04 cobra has a 4.6 v8 engine with a 90mm eaton supercharger while the 07 gt 500 has a 5.4 v8 engine with a 110mm eaton supercharger. Once again though, if you are more interested in being able to drive a road corse and turn on a dime, then the saleen would be the choice over the shelby gt 500.

Depends, if you are talking about the Ford GT (styled off the old GT40) than the GT is the best hands down.
If you are talking about Mustang based vehicles than it also depends on which model Saleen, and what you want from the vehicle. Using the current model line and generalizations from other model eras the Cobra usually reigns supreme on paper. Saleen offers better handling cars, but usually have lower horsepower. The Mustang GT is below the Saleen and Cobra in horsepower (although not by much on the Saleen sometimes) and definately has worse handling. The V-6 or base model Mustang pulls the anchor position every time.
Many people choose the Mustang GT over the higher models because they are cheaper baseline and can be modified for less money depending on what you want to do with the car. For instance you can build a better drag racing car with less money by starting with a Mustang GT, because your not starting with a car that is made to be well rounded, and can purpose build the car without spending money on things needed for road racing.

I woud choose all of these over any European or Japanese high performance car.

Well, the Mustang has a Cobra model, so you can say they might be the same thing. The normal Mustang is probably last because of its V6 and doesn't handle as good. The Mustang GT or Cobra/Shelby would be better.

If you mean the Ford GT as in the Ferrari looking beast, I would say that along with the Saleen may be the best.

Then if you are talking about the models for Mustangs (as there is a normal Mustang, then the Mustang GT, then the Mustang GT500 Cobra/Shelby, and a Saleen Mustang) I would say the Mustang GT500 Cobra/Shelby or the Saleen Mustang are the best.

I have a 98' gt....Personally, I like the cobra the best! Saleen is just a package that includes: body kit, performance upgrade(supercharger or turbo) and wheels, pretty much. The 2003 cobra is the best year mustang i think out because, it has the stock supercharger and the mods you can install on it are basically unlimited because, the displacement is much bigger then for example the gt(4.6L). I would recommend either getting a cobra for starters because, it has dual over-head cam and if you aren't completely satisfied with it then look into getting the saleen or roush package. Hope i was some help.

I have an 03 Cobra and love it but have seen some pretty mean looking Saleens. If, by better, you mean faster, then the obvious choice is the GT if you mean the GT500 but any of those vehicles can be just as fast with the right mods. A stock Cobra can compete with cars costing 3X more.

Define better. It would depend on what you are looking for. The Saleen and the GT500 would be fairly close.

I assume that you are talking about all Mustangs here, and not the Shelby Cobra, or the Ford GT.

With the mods available for the Mustang, you can make it go as fast as you want. (If that is possible. lol )

I have always been a fan of the Cobra. The Saleen is nice but I think that Cobras are overall better cars.

It depends on the year of Mustang? If it's the 99-04 body style I'd go for a 2000 Saleen S351. Laser red with a black convertible top.

The GT500 is the best Mustang to start with. They can be easily modified to blow the doors off of almost anything. Then engine is bullet proof. I know a Mustang tuner who is running 17 lbs of boost in his and it doesn't even phase the car. With a set of 4.10 gears and drag radials, that car just flies.
