I have to go Afghanistan and I will be leaving my dog with my mother. I have had him for about a year and we are very good pals. I hate to have him forget about our friendship. What do you think will happen?

Dogs have a good memory. I have been training dogs for a long time and occasionally I see clients with their dogs and the dog will come right over and say hello like I am their best buddy. I think your dog will definately remember you. You might want to leave a sweatshirt ot 2 behind that you have worn around for awhile. Your dog might be very attached to you and miss you. I have had that problem a lot too. If you give them a sweatshirt that they can use as a security blanket it will also help them to rmember you and make them feel safe while you are away. Just make sure your mom doesnt wash it or the scent will be gone. Good luck and be careful over there!

Your dog will absolutely NOT forget you, even if you are gone for years. Be safe over there, and don't worry about your pal. He will probably maul you with kisses when you get back. You might want to leave him an old t-shirt with your scent on it to keep where he sleeps. Like a security blanket.

He won't forget you! Dog's have great memories! I would leave him something with your scent on it, like a teeshit, or a sweatshirt. Another thought is to, maybe record your voice on a tape recorder and have your mom play it back for him occasionally, and when you call home from Afganistan, have your mom put the phone up to his ear and talk to him, he'll recognise you! He'll be so happy to see you, when you get back! God Bless You! Be careful out there! Come back safe!

I doubt he will forget you. They have good memory with smells and stuff. How long are you going away? My family and I went on a trip to the southwest for 3 weeks, and our dog still remembered us, our house, tricks, etc. He remembered everything

Dogs always seem to remember their first owners.

We had a german shepherd for 3 years that we received from a deaf and mute man who couldn't train her. He turned up 3 years later to ask for one of her pups and she went beserk and piddled everywhere in excitement.

Needless to say we sent them home together, (since she was now well trained, and since we train our dogs with hand gestures as well, it only took a little to teach her old master how to communicate with her)
