Ok so I'm unsure if my eye contact with others is appropriate or not. I usually hold eye contact with people for 2 to 4 seconds when talking to them followed by a 1 to 3 second break in eye vontact. When I listen to others I maintain eye contact for 4 to 7 seconds followed by a 1 or 2 second break in eye contact(via nodding). So is my eye contact normal or is it in need of improvments?

Same thing happens!!! Each time I talk to strangers/formal people they get confused! I keep on starring in their eyes! Some of them think I have a crush on them or sth! so try sometimes NOT to look in the eyes! lol but for me, I dnt care that much :)

I always try to maintain as much eye contact as i can when talking to someone close. But when it comes to people you've just met or aren't well acquainted with it might be awkward so the occasional breaks are recommended. If your at a business meeting, doing a job interview or anything professional then you maintain eye contact as much as possible.

I think you are safe. It is the avoidance of eye contact or making a person feel as if you are staring that causes discomfort. You also can take your que from the person you are having the conversation with.

sounds good but also be weary that people who seem to have a lot of difficulty maintaining much eye contact are regarded as shifty individuals

I hope you are not counting in your head while making this eye contact because you might be looking like you're not paying attention and you're probably not.

people who do not have eye contact when talking or listening have something to hide.

Yeah, quit paying so much attention to it and do what feels natural.

Don't just look at their eyes. Look at their nose, ear, chin etc. You will come across as less intense.
