I think you are confusing the ol-time real conservatism with the plundering neo-con trash in power now.
Old time conservatives like tariffs against trade imbalances, secure borders, and want people to get out and work and be rewarded for their work. They want stable currency and self-sufficiency. They like a strong, stable middle class. That would be someone like Ron Paul, who is running for the presidency.
The neocons are doing their best to concentrate as much wealth in the top 10% as they can, shrinking the wage-earning middle class and growing the poorest class by removing all barriers to exporting all manufacturing work overseas. They are exporting the jobs away from the consumer base, which is not sustainable at all. They have effectively shifted much of the gross national product to the military... which is really fascist. They are also removing the "safety nets" that help protect families... things like social security, unemployment benefits and health insurance. These guys will hide behind all kinds of clap-trap to get what they want... they are not "conservative" at all.
Democrats are essentially socialists because they depend on a large support base of poor people who all want a hand-out. They want everyone dependent upon the government... "cradle to grave".
If you really look at it, Republicans are fascists and Democrats are Socialists. That's why we really need to get some third parties in there.

Actually, Big business does not want open borders, or amnesty, or a pathway to citizenship, no matter what they say. If you enact any of these, ILLEGAL aliens will become legal and therefore not be able to exploit. Most conservatives would rather have a strong border and tougher laws on the hiring of ILLEGALS because they know that the only ones who benefit from the stalemate we have now is a few fat cats. The rest of us bear the burden of the myriad of problems created by an ILLEGAL workforce. Higher taxes, increased burden on school systems , and higher car insurance just to name a few. You have, as many do incorrectly lumped conservatives and neo cons together. If you are going to ask a question to group, make sure you are targeting the correct group to ask your question to.

What do you mean "Most conservatives are dead-set against open borders and amnesty for illegals"? Wasn't Bush the one who was pushing the last amnesty bill? If Bush isn't considered conservative, I don't know who is.

Everyone seems to think that big business and conservatives are the same thing. They aren't. Conservatives are usually much more focused on social issues rather than economic. The only thing both groups fully agree is that less government interference the better.
