Once you hear the thunder and see the lightening, get up from your cave or under the blankets or whether you hide, and walk to the nearest window. Open the window and let fresh raining air come through - don't worry about water on the windowsill, it's only water.
Just open the window and look outside and up at the sky and take deep breaths -- believe it or not, this is actually very calming for many people once they actually do it, because with the deep breathing and sound of falling rain, it helps your brain to connect the oxygen coming into your body (good) with rain, thunder, and lightening (natural phenomena - also good), so in a way you become conditioned to enjoying storms because of the fresh air and opportunity to take a breather.
If that doesn't help, then watch lots of videos on YouTube about storms and tornadoes and learn that thunder is just electric currents flowing through clouds in the sky and the lightening is the magic that happens when it mixes with rain.

Well if you are religious like me you could pray to Jesus and trust in him that he will keep you safe. Or if you are more technical you could picture a lightning bolt in the sky and how cool it would look in the clouds. Or if you weren't so technical you could count the seconds there are between a lighting bolt and the thunder. Well hope one of those helps. You could also try just relaxing and thinking of something else. And don't worry, the lightning won't hurt you or burn down your house. You can forget all those stories that you've watched on The Weather Channel, those things only happend to like a dozen people out of the rest of the world, thats why they are on tv. If it was common than it probably would be a late night special.

Just try to remember that lightning can't really hurt you inside your home, and that being struck by lightning is a rare occurrance. Thunder shouldn't scare you at all... It's just sound. I'm posting the link to a page that has some tips at the bottom for what to do when you feel you panic level rising. Other than that, all I can say is see a doctor.
Good luck!

Of course, Gordon Liddy famously climbed to the top of a tree during a thunderstorm in order to couquer his fear of lightning and thunder. Then, he caught, cooked, and ate a rat to conquer his fear of rats. I don't really recommend those approaches... Ask your folks to take you to a hypnotist who handles such things. Should be very easy for you to do - and will teach you things that will help you later in life.

When I hear the thunder
I find it to be re-assuring.
Knowing that God is bigger and more powerful than I
he must also have a deeper voice.
I envision him speaking from the clouds.
It's OK because he's in control.
From an old Nursery Tale,
There was a rumbling sound when big bowling pins fell
as the giants bowled.
When I think of that, it makes me smile.

i went thru that so i know how horrible it feels.. having children to comfort helped me out of it .. but if thats not possible for you try a cat or a dog.. you need someone to comfort and re-assure that they are safe and there is nothing to worry about...and until you can do this i suggest headphones and music and a darkened room ( but use a tape or cd you dont need to hear the crackle of the lighting over the radio) good luck!

You have what is called Tonitrophobia. It can be cured through a quick process (as with intensive exposure therapy) or a gradual one (as with systematic desensitization therapy).
