its obviously unrealistic to think that a lost limb can be restored to how it originally was; on the other hand we can pray and hope that God would allow more progress in the area of medical research where artificial limbs can greatly improve the quality of life of amputees.

I've never heard of anyone restoring a lost limb. Might be a psychic surgeon somewhere could do it. They do some surprising things.

24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Mark 11:24
If you try you are already in doubt. If you pray without doubt and your prayers don't work, there can only be 2 reasons:
1. God is a liar.
2. You are not in faith. You lied to yourself.
The way to increase faith is to listen to more faith message. Attend chrches that preach faith. Meditate and confess faith verses like Mark 11:24.

well, there was this nun once, who had one leg shorter than the other because of polio when she was a child, and she still has the shoe, (the shoe was very tall in order to compensate for the length of the other leg), and she was healed. I think it took a day for her leg to get to the same length as the other.

I'm no theist, but you might aim for more sensitivity if you really want "serious answers." Cancer is an awful illness and I'm sure even Atheists, in the sad helplessness of it all, have prayed for it to go away.
