Generally cigrettee smoking is not detected in Blood tests. Blood tests do not pick up previous or concurrent use of cigarettes. The blood tests indicate only certain functions like - Liver and kidney function., Blood count level., Cholesterol levels. If you have smoked marijuana in the last four weeks, this can be picked up through a urine test.-

Blood Test For Smoking

There are several blood tests that may indicate someone as a smoker or as an individual exposed to high levels of second hand smoke. Liver enzymes may be elevated and nicotine/nicotine metabolites would be present for short term durations (a few days to a few weeks). BUT, an abnormal carbomonoxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin level will be a big red flag that someone is smoker. (or a victim of smoke inhalation). Since hemoglobin is located within the red blood cells (and their life span is typically 120 days within the bloodstream), you would need to have been not smoking for 120 days for the levels to approach normal. This is probably why they want to do the test every 4 months (that's about 120 days, right?).

So the answer to your question is ...... Yes.

Yes they can detect if you have been smoking by a blood test. I used to work for an insurance company and I did the test like that. It takes at least 7-10 days for the nicotine to leave your system.

Yes. It can take up to 72 hours for the blood-serum to become nicotine-free and 90% of nicotine's metabolites to exit the body via your urine.
