Good question.
I think Jesus said "let the dead bury the dead", meaning, that many people are spirtually dead, they just aren't physically dead yet.
Luke 9:” 60 But he said to him: “Let the dead bury their dead, but you go away and declare abroad the kingdom of God.”

"Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." "
Matthew 8:21-22
Obviously by this phrase, Jesus meant let the (spiritually) dead bury the (physically) dead, as that is the only way the statement could make any sense.

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
Mark 9:25,26 kjv.

In one passage He said to" fear Him who is able to destroy both body and soul in Hell". Notably the "spirit" was not mentioned as being destroyed in Hell.
Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
