We just got a 4 year old male yorkie, when we got him we thought he was just dirty but we now see his skin is flaking bad!
We have given him a bath and read that conditioner can be good for his skin and coat.
I have 2 questions..
1. What can cause such bad flaky skin in yorkies?
2. Has anyone tried using conditioner for skin and coat??
Thanks, Mel

Someone may have been over-bathing him which can cause flaking dry skin. Don't use human conditioners on your dog, but there are plenty of conditioners formulated for your dogs coat. What is important is choosing the best shampoo for his coat type and so next time you take him in to be examined by the Vet or to get shots, have the Vet look at his coat to see if the flaking is from dry skin or from oily skin so you get the right product or type of product recommended to you. Also, your dog needs at least 2 percent linoleic acid in his food for basic skin and coat health. Many foods on the market do not have this, so you will want to check the bag to make sure percentage is higher and also that there is no wheat or wheat gluten, corn or corn gluten or rice protein concentrate in the food. Sometimes skin problems area reaction to these substances which are common in many dog foods.
Some skin and coat supplements your Vet can give you, ask your Vet about Skin Formulation 3V Caps which have Omega 3, Vit A, D and E in them, or ask how much Norwegian Cod Liver Oil you should add to his diet.
Another supplement is NutriVed.
A Vet exam is NEEDED to determine the cause of flaking because it sounds like it is pretty bad.

Stop bathing him.. bathing too much can dry out the skin. You can use conditioner and rinse it out, or use a leave in conditioner and work it down to his skin... but back off on the shampoo. It strips the coat and skin of natural oils.

What is he eating? Poor diet can cause flaky skin.

Some dogs just tend to have dry flaky skin, when they are basically healthy.
Since you just got your dog, maybe there is a dietary issue also. Consider a good oil supplement for dogs.
I have used baby or kids' (human) conditioner and I find it works better than doggie conditioner. Some people swear by Avon Skin-so-soft (made for humans) for dogs with dry or flaky skin.

He could have mange...a skin condition where the skin is itchy and flaky...maybe even hotspots. To be sure you should take him to the vet because there are different types of mange. If it is due to mites burrowing into his skin, the vet may give you a special dip that you'll use every 2 weeks...or you may have to bring him in to the vet to get a dip...or he can prescribe something if it's just flaky skin.

Flaky skin can be caused by several factors. The most common would be diet related. This can be either reactions to grains or additives in the commercial food or a lack of adequate nutrition from his food. I would try changing to a more natural diet as this can often fix skin issues.

The other reasons could be a reaction to something in his environment. As you just got him he may even be suffering from stress due to the changes in his life.
