If the war is a just war, for example, in defence of one's country, killing an enemy would not be a sin. Theologians are still debating if Iraq is in fact a just war.
The commandment is often mistranslated, it should read "Thou shalt not murder," not "Thou shalt not kill."
For example, it would not be a sin to use deadly force against someone who broke into your home and threatened you with death or serious injury. It would be the same if one country threatened to destroy another.
World War II was clearly a just war on the Allied side because of the atrocities committed by the Axis powers.
However, even in a just war, sins can be committed, such as the wanton killing of civilians not involved in the war. But wars today are difficult because children are armed with AK-47's and know how to use them.

All that I can say to that is, each country is praying to someone for victory,,,,both sides asking for a victory,,,,,,
catch 22,,,,,,they can't both have it, so they all suffer,
damned tragedy,,,,,
.**."war never determines who is right, only who is left."
I know there are things we have to fight for, and certain freedoms have been granted only through bloodshed, trying to prove their point, earn their Independence,or gains ones own personal rights,,etc,,,but it just seems like a terrible price to pay, ---having to end another life, just to prove a point before someone, or several someones will listen and/or take notice,----
---Some people can kill, others don't have 'it',,,,,I personally don't have 'it', BUT if someone entered my home and threatened my family, I'm sure I could find 'it' in me, to protect them AT ALL COSTS,,,,,,same basic principal,,,,,but there again, catch 22.......its a personal battle and decision,,,,sounds like you battle with this decision, ---your conscience is trying to tell you,,,,,perhaps, that war, and putting a bullet in someone you don't know, may not be your cup of tea my friend,,,,,,,see perhaps what you can do to serve the war effort from home,,,,letters to the troops, getting care packages together, adopting families to help them while a loved one is off serving,,,,,those are just as noble as dying for ones country, or beliefs.....
Good luck on your journey,,,,
Blessings of strength and clarity I send to you,,,,
