Uh, the question about Native Americans (it isn't "American Indians") was offensive to me as a Native American. We don't wear feathers on our heads (at least not in the Southeast,) and we had 500 different cultures and languages. We're just as nice as the next set of people, but we're a bit touchy as a whole when it comes to cultural issues.

This is the Information Age, and I thought most everyone knew that.

That is a lot of questions!

I have no idea how far the Statue of Liberty is from the airport. It also would depend on if you're flying into Newark or JFK. You can probably take a bus or cab from either airport to the harbor. Then you have to take a boat to the actual statue.

There are still American Indians who live traditionally (although typically not with feathers in their hair except at certain ceremonies, etc.). The Cheyenne have reservations in Oklahoma. The Navajo have reservations in New Mexico. I'm not exactly sure about other tribes, but they all have reservations. Access to those reservations and talking with the people who live there varies by reservation areas. My brother-in-law is 3/4 Navajo and a lot of his family still live on the reservation. They are definitely friendly. You could probably take busses to get there (or trains) depending on where you're coming from. A lot of casinos are on reservation land and busses frequently stop there.

The Amish are concentrated a lot in Ohio and Pennsylvania. There are both closed and open communities.

There are definitely laundry mats all over the US where you can insert coins and wash your clothes.

I have no idea about back packer hostels. Definitely cheap hotels though.

Hope that helps!

Can't answer all your questions, but I'll give it a shot.
Statue of Liberty is on an island, you have to take a ferry to get to it. Yes, you can go up the stairs through the statue.
Not sure about indians living traditionally - although there are times when they have powwows - traditional music and dancing, etc. Many of them live on reservations. They're like any other race - some are friendly, some aren't.
I believe the Amish typically live in Pennsylvania. Not sure how welcoming of outsiders they are, depends on their community - some of them welcomed Oprah, Gail (her best friend) and her camera crew when they were taking a road trip tour of some of the US.
Washing clothes - laundromats are what they're called. Hotels usually have coin operated washers and dryers as well. Just check the local phone books, dial 411 for information or check at the front desk of a hotel you're staying in.
Hostels - haven't heard of any, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Perhaps the YMCA?

How far is it from the new york airport?

sorry i do not know for sure.

Can i get a bus or train to go there from the airport?

yes there are busses, trains, and taxi cabs all over NY.

is it true that you can go up stairs through the statue?

you used to be able to, but i am not sure now. back in the 80's i had the opportunity to go all the way up to the crown. the view is nice, but the windows are really small.

are there still american indians who live traditionally with feathers on their heads? in which state do they live? can i go to one of those settlements and talk to them? are they friendly people? is there any public transport to get there?

there are some. but not many. most dress in fairly modern clothing. but they do hold cleebrations called Pow-Wow's where they dress in the old ways. and offer much information as to their culture. they are in almost every state. most that i have met are very friendly. as for public transoprt, it would depend on where it was. IN general you can find a bus or taxi to just about anywhere though.

in which state do amish people live? do they welcome outsiders?

well i know that there is a large amish community in Lancaster Pennsylvania. as for welcoming outsiders, they will talk to you, and share some information. but do not expect to be invited for dinner or to stay overnight in one of their homes.

Are there places in america where i can insert coins and wash my cloths?

Yes.

are there lots of back packer hostels in america?

the country is dotted with hotel's and motels. that start in price at about 25 dollars a night.

as for places dedicated to backpackers, probably not many. there are few places where you will be more than 100 miles from the nearest town or city (the midwestern deserts and the large mountain ranges being the exception of course)

Yes...you can take a bus or shuttle from the airport to where a ferry will take you to Liberty Island...and yes...you CAN ride an elevator on the inside and go to the top of HER crown where there's a viewing platform...

Very few American Indians left who have "feathers" in their heads very often...they will perform traditional ceremonies for the tourists (and in private) but for the most part they wear jeans and t-shirts like everyone else, and own Casinos (because Gambling is allowed on the Indian Reservations)...and Yes...you can visit them, they're friendly and won't shoot you with arrows, and you can talk to them...(it's been a long time since the Old West, and they're all educated and modernized now...
Public transportation in America is done by planes, trains, buses, and automobiles...the least expensive is a bus...and if you take a train, you'll have to take a bus from there...taxi's are very expensive...last minute plane tickets are VERY expensive...
Warning: DO NOT hitchhike...DO NOT accept rides from strangers...In America...really perverted, nasty people that will stop and give you a ride will probably steal your money, rape you, or kill you...DO NOT hitch a ride with strangers, unless it's a nice-looking family with kids in a station wagon or recreational vehicle...DO NOT accept a ride from a Truck Driver...they are very creepy sometimes...
Yes...they DO have public laundry, coin-operated places that are pretty cheap...
They DO NOT have hostels...
They have "motels," and the cheaper "motels" are used by prostitutes and their clients, as well as other unsavory characters...

Warning: America is NOT a place you want to travel alone if you're female...And if you have a traveling companion, make sure it's a tough guy male...if it's just you...buy some Mace and a switchblade when you get here, and keep it in your purse...single females traveling alone in America are generally in grave danger on the highways...

We are a nation of really nice people...but the wide open highways are filled with human predators...

Be very careful...

And Welcome to America...!!!

im not sure about the distance from statue of liberty to the airport, but i hear new york has a wonderful public transportation system. American indians live on plots of land called "Indian reservations" and in some ceremonies, they do wear feather headdresses. They are very friendly people. You may be able to take a bus to these places, but they are tipically very from from large towns. There are lots of these reservations in Nevada, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and other states.

Lots of Amish people live in Pennsylvania. I do not know alot about them, but they might not be friendly to visitors, seeing as they are often the targets of ridicule.

Places where you insert coins for clothes are called "Laundry Mats." There are plenty of them.

I don't know what back packer hotels are.

Good luck.

Laundromat is the sign you will look for to wash your cloths. There should be many of them in cities but you may not find any in smaller towns.

Amish are mostly from Pennsylvania. I do think they welcome outsiders.

Hostelling International USA has a web site below and you can make reservations.

The Statue of Liberty does have a stair and it is a climb. When it is worm it is hard. You need to take a ferry boat.

Statue Tour
Entry to the monument pedestal is by Time Pass Ticket only. Time Pass Tickets are available in advance on line at www.statuereservations.com or by calling 1-866-STATUE4 and reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance of your visit. When on the island, a secondary screening is required of all Time Pass Ticket holders and may require extra waiting time.

I can answer some of these.

3) American Indians - although for the most part living in rather modern homes, most tribes on reservations still perform traditional ceremonies. There are even reservations in New York State. Here is a link: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/reservations/nyreservations.htm .

4) The majority of Amish live in Pennsylvania , Indiana and Ohio. In my experience, they are *very* friendly to outsiders. Here is more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish#Population_and_distribution .

5) Lanudromats or laundrettes are common in all large towns and cities.

6) Hostels - http://www.hostels.com/en/us.html - the U.S. is not well-saturated with hostels the way Europe is

I hope this helps.
