1996 V-6 2.5 Duratec. Idle started surging then car stalled but got home. After a while car started burning super rich, then kept stalling out. I replaced the IAC and car runs good now, but stalls at stops or at first accelleration. Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

Also you should scan the car for codes. There could be other issues causing this too.

THis problem sounds like symptoms of a very dirty MAF(mass airflow sensor). If it is slightly dirty the car will he
sitate on accel. It is worth a try to clean it anyway. This device is located after your air filter. The actual location may vary from the link in your contour but it it looks like a black sqaure with 2 screws holding it in. Pretty much all fords have it. It is very delicate. There is a product called CRC mass air flow cleaner, but what is in the link is good too. I wouldnt use anything else. It is a very delicate part so be very careful.

Disconnect your battery for 15 minutes after this to clear the PCM data. Hopefully this will fix it.

Could be a crack in a computer circuit board. I had a Volvo that when it was hot the heat in the engine compartment would get hot enough to make the crack widen and stop the engine. Of course when I opened the hood to find the problem it would let the heat out and the car would start and run fine. You you think it is the heat or the humidity ? Do you always go to the same gas station? It's a good idea to keep a log of everything when the problem occurs. What accessories were on in the car, what speed were you driving just before the problem, were you slowing down or speeding up, how much gas is in the gas tank and what do the dash gages show, etc. Then share this information with your mechanic. It may be if you try another repair shop they may have seem this problem before and could help. Best of luck.

You need to keep running it for a few days for the condition to correct itself. The computer tried to correct for the idle/surge by making the mixture richer. Now that you fixed it, the computer have to adjust it back.

Or you can disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes, and reconnect it, and that'll reboot the computer (and reset all your radios and whatnot) which should accomplish the same thing.

I would look into the TPS sensor and perhaps a dirt MAF.
