I have a 1 yr old red dobie. She has had her first heat and we are considering breeding her. We have an appointment with our vet for all of her test(hip displasia, VwD, and all the other tests). What steps do I need to take next in finding her a good "mate" and all that. My fiance breed siberian huskys for about 7 years so he knows all about the breeding part.

She is from a long line of Ch and she is a purebreed. Sorry for not puttig that. Most reputable breeders dont breed unless they are purebreed.

I am confused- if she is only in her first heat and 1 year old, her hips can't be evaluated properly until she's 2- they can do a preliminary, but until 2 years of age, it doesn't really 'count', the skeletal system is not finished developing (according to my vet, who doesn't like to do them until that age). To find a quality mate, 'google' to find a dobie club near you- they should be able to put you in touch with other breeders concerned with quality.

They have to be 2 years old to register their hips with OFA, but any vet can tell you if the hips look good so far. It is recommended to wait to breed large dogs on their 3rd or 4th heat, when they are done growing and are fully mature.
I'd contact dog show clubs in your area, as well as look for breeders advertising in back of DogWorld or DogFancy magazines. Do a lot of research into the breeder and the dog. An ethical breeder will only want to breed their dog to an excellent specimen of the breed--one that fits the AKC standard for conformation, color, good health, temperament, etc.

Find a reputable breeder through AKC OR THE DOBIE CLUB OF AMERICA. Most breeders do stud out their males to approved females.

Then you must have her Pedigree papers. AKC does a good job in keeping the bloodlines clean as not to breed in any imperfections within the breed. If you are not a backyard breeder, then contact the organization which she surley is registered through and ask them if they know of any stud services avaiable in your area.

Why would you breed a dog that you don't even state is pure-bred? Why would you breed a dog when it has not earned a Ch in front of its name?

Check petfinder.com at the sheer number of dogs and dobies that need homes. Please don't contribute to the pet over-population in this country by being a "hobby breeder" it sounds as if your dog is of pet-quality - so spay her and enjoy her as a pet.

If you want to get another dog, then you can find a dog, pound bredder, ect. But if you DONT want to get another dog then do what my neighbor does! Put a ad in the paper or something to look for a mate for your dog! Be sure to ogive her privacy! :)
