husband been in rehab, and now in an out-patient program. Has been clean for a lil over a month. He never told me about this random drug test he had last Monday, until this last Thursday when he came home from a meeting, saying he failed Mondays drug test, he tested positive for Valium. He says he has not taken any. He is a medic, and he says he had a valve to break on him with Valium...but he didn't think that would have caused it, he also says sometimes what u eat can cause a test to show positive. In my mind I am thinking this are all excuses... Can someone medical trained tell me if any of this is possible or may have gone through this and know? I do know his choice of drugs was NOT Valium..it was opiates...yes I know that makes no difference...but it does make his side look a lil more convincing which is why I am asking is any of those stories possible?

yes............you can fail & be clean at the same time......a high school football team was going to meet another team.....out of town....they were drug tested before the game.....almost all tested positive for opiate,s......they thought....not that many could be on drug,s....they finally traced it back to a fast food restaraunt.....poppy seed bun,s were the culprit....seem,s the team stoped there for lunch just prior to arrival.....I,m not sure about valium.....but I,m sure it,s possible!

Benzo's are not usually the ones most blamed with false positives.

Only a few things can possibly lead to a false positive for benzo's, some sleeping pills, and anxiety medications can show a false positive, but if he were on those, they should have come up when he went in for testing. There are also some herbal type meds that COULD possibly lead to a false positive.

Not enough Valium would absorb through the skin if a vial of Valium broke open, not possible.

I can't tell you if he is lying or not, I can tell you that as far as I am aware, there are no foods that will give the false positive for Valium.

If anyone starts answering here that there ar foods that do so, be sure to do the research on them.

Yes you can fail and be clean. I am not sure how he tested positive for valium but I would insist on a blood test to rule out drug use. Many things like cold medicine or herbal meds or herbal teas can cause a false positive. My friends daughter had that happen at a collegiate swim meet. She had a cold and the trainer gave her some Sudafed to clear her sinuses before a big meet and she got radomly tested and showed positive. She had to sit out swimming for a whole year but thankfully she didn't lose her swimming scholarship.

I have had a false positive for barbiturates before. It does happen. If it was a simple pee test with colored strips, it is more prone to error.

I'm suspicious that he said Valium. Most test kits test for benzodiazepines as a group, and not specific benzodiazepines such as Valium or Xanax. (I'm not sure that it is even possible to be that specific.) Mentioning a valve breaking just smells fishy.

You should talk to a doctor or nurse who treats addicts for a solid answer. Don't depend on some yahoo on Yahoo for an answer.

Yes. Nothing is perfect, especially artificial tests. It could be that the testee had taken some illness medicine of some sort recently, or the tester just made a mistake and showed positive. Similar events happen all the time and are testaments to the progress of mankind.

That sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. If he was working with a vial of Valium wouldn't that mean he was administering it to a patient. He shouldn't be touching it unless that was the case right? If it did break he would have been wearing gloves. It all sounds like a bunch of crap to me.
