My dog is about 10 months old and we have never let her be around male dogs because we don't want her to get pregnant. Is there any reason her genitals would be swollen? It's a major concern... I'm thinking she might be in heat, but I have never seen this before. it started a couple of days ago, and she seems to be acting normal, but her back end is very swollen and kind of hanging. I would like to know a reason for this to make sure it is nothing serious.

She's probably going into heat. Keep her away from males. After 7-10 days, she'll start bleeding, like she's having a period. But after about 10 days of that, she'll stop and her vulva will return to normal size. You will have to wait a couple of weeks to get her spayed after this.

Yep-sounds like she is in heat. She will bleed for about 10 days, then after that 10 days, she will be fertile for about 10 more days. Please keep her under supervision while all this is going on. She can't go out unattended!!! Boys will be coming from all around to get to her!!!! She will want to get to them also!!!! You can get some little diapers from the pet store to help with the bleeding. Now you are gonna have to wait at least 2 months to get her spayed. A good vet should recommend that you wait couple months before she gets spayed. JUST REMEMBER, THE LONGER YOU LET HER GO WITHOUT SPAYING HER, INCREASES HER CHANCES OF GETTING MAMMARY CANCER, INFECTED UTERUS(PYOMETRA). GOOD LUCK

Yes, it's a sign of her being in heat, for the first time. She may or may not have some blood spotting.
How about you get her spayed, and then not have to worry about her being around male dogs?
Spaying reduces the chances of female dogs developing breast cancer. It eliminates the chance of ovarian and uterine cancers.

She is coming in heat. Keep her away from other male dogs. Also don't let her outside unsupervised as males dogs are probably hopping fences to get to her from miles away (literally). She will be bleeding in a few days. Visit debbiejensen.com

She's in heat and you're likely to get a little blood during the process because females have a menstral cycle too... Unless you're planning on breeding the dog, I'd start talking to your vet about getting her spayed.

shes probally starting her heat, not very attractive, you will find she will start 'bleeding' and it will clear after a while, can be up to a month, my rotti did, just make sure shes in a secure area as dogs will climb fences even mate through fences, dig holes to get to her and she will try and get out, she can only get pregnant while on heat and will not be responsive any other time

Your dog is in heat for sure. I have a 5 pound chihuahua and when she goes in heat her genitalia is probably about the same weight.
