Yes, I was depressed for 30 years or so before I had the sense to see a shrink. Antidepressants have had an extraordinary effect on my quality of life.

Yes. The same way a person can gain weight and not really be aware of it. The best thing to do is to take a depression screening test. A high score means see a doctor. And be sure to tell the doctor depression is the reason for the visit.

I suffered childhood and adult depression for several years before I went for treatment including medication. I thought I was normal but everyone kept telling me to go for help. Now I realize I had been depressed all that time. I'm happy now and have no depression as long as I take my medication.

Absolutely. A lot of people suffer through mild depression without knowing that it's anything more than a bad spell.

Totally. Depressed isn't like, just sighing and crying and feeling lonely. Its a lot more. Go to a website to test yourself, try these websites for self tests..good luck-hope you feel better, if your are down.

Yes.
Depression is more than just sadness.
One of the symptoms can be an inability to recognize or judge reality. Your memory and reasoning can slow down.
Another symptom can be thinking "every one is against me" and you are the only one who does not have problems.
Sometimes - for me - I need to have an outside observation of my thoughts and behaviors. It took considerable convincing for me to see depression in myself.

I would think after a few weeks of being depressed you might notice it.

It sure is. I have clincal depression and before it was diagnosed I was the last one to see it. Other family members could see it but I didn't.

I think you'd know it.
You could be depressed 4 years from now and not know it,
but if you're suffering from depression, it's pretty obvious.
