It's amazing, but New York has a much more peaceful feel than people think. Well, I mean well-lit Manhattan and the Avenues with 24 hour stores, cafes, restaurants, etc.
In cities like L.A. or ATL or HOU that are not so walkable, pedestrians are more often easy targets or suspects.
There are stricter gun control laws in NY, but most gun use is armed robbery. Maybe fewer murders because it's crowded and not easy to run and hide, but there is an admirable level of multicultural tolerance, and endless variety. It's simply not cool to be hateful and prejudiced there.The whole city isn't just black and white like some more dangerous cities. When everyone is mixed together people learn to deal.
Also, THe education level in NYC is really high! I'm not just talking about state test scores that don't say that much about all the levels of intelligence. There's a lot of musical, creative, literary, theater, comedy, and artistic intelligence there as well as emotional intelligence and street-smartness.

It was Mayor Gulliani who really cleaned up the city. Before he came into office, you could walk around Times Square while smoking weed. He shut down all strip clubs, and upped the amount of NYC police to about 35,000. Can you imagine, 35,000 police patrolling only 22 sq. miles?!
Mayor Bloomberg has continued to keep the city safe.
