I know this might sound like a dumb question, but I am just wondering. I just got a new job and I can't find my ss card any where and believe me I have looked every where. I know that I can request another but it takes 10 business days to get it and my first day is tomorrow and they expect for me to bring it in. So what is the worst that could happen if they have to wait for it. I really need help with this one cuz Im goin crazy here.

Thanks Everyone but I looked around and found my own answer. I will give the 10 points to the person who was most correct

OH, by the way here it is:

Employees are required to show their Social Security cards, if available. More important than seeing the actual card, is submitting a worker's Form W2 with the employee's correct number and the EXACT name that appears on the worker's Social Security card. The employee may not get the proper credit for his/her earnings unless the correct information appears on the employee's Form W2.

If your employee applied for a Social Security number but does not yet have a card or number, indicate the number has been "Applied for" on the employee's Form W-2. When the employee does receive his card, file Form W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement, with the employee's Social Security number.

An employee who does not have a Social Security number may apply for one by completing Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. Workers can get

Yes you do. If you explain that you can't find it and have applied for a duplicate, they'll probably wait the 10 days. Legally they are supposed to see it when you start work, though. Your first paycheck could get held up until after you produce the card.

Do you by any chance have a passport? That could substitute for the time being.

Go into your local SS office and request it tomorrow!! They'll print out a paper that says your name and matches you with your SS#, and states you will have a card within X amount of time. You can use this paper to begin your job. Otherwise, the employer does NOT have to let you work or hire you. They DO require a copy of you SS card on file.

You can start a job without having the actual card as long as you have applied for and have one on file. They will simply want to copy your card when you get it from Social Security.

Yes, you do need it.

You should be OK if you at least have your birth certificate... but you will not be paid til you provide the SS card.

just tell your boss that you lost it and ask for your ss number just to give your boss a peace of mind that you indeed have it. you can either call or go online for it. you should photocopied your ss id, that way you will have proof that you indeed have one. just try telling your boss and he/she might just understand. you can tell him/her that you will give/show it as soon as you get it. tell him that you are still processing for a new one since you've lost it. good luck coz you really need your ss id.

I never had to bring one into a job. I have had to have it memorized for applications, but if worst comes to worst, they will jsu have to wait for it. Just get it ordered as soon as possible.
