If you like darker works, those that sent chills up your spine perhaps, you might want to check out the paintings of artists like Charles Burchfield and Edvard Munch. And the fantastic drawings and illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley.
These artists were all before your time but they created very unique styles.

Raphael would be my favorite! Raphael's artistic mastery is that of a realist. His pictures exude realism: they show us people and objects as he saw them and as only he know how to reproduce them. But they are not, or are only in part, objects from the realms of our own experience. What Raphael was asked to paint were chiefly articles of faith, figures from the bible and from classical mythology, gods and goddesses, saints, angles, bearers of the message of Christian salvation. This defines the function of his realism: at a critical moment in European thinking, he sets the power of his art against the question mark being placed over tradition. Heaven is brought into relationship with earth and thereby conveyed to the modern consciousness. Some of his many paintings to look up would be: The Entombment, The Sistine Madonna, The Transfiguration....among others!

My mother... she has been painting the outside walls of her own toddler school buildings in Africa, for 25 years now... she is great with all kinds of cartoons, disney-figures, landscapes, etc... and she never gets recognition for it because it sounds so common.
I admire her art even more because she is not famous, and because nobody really bothers complimenting her on it. She waves it off as 'no big deal' but she is great!

i agree with skylight... rene' magritte. he is my favorite, but i also love Mark Rothko. Rothko paintings surround you, you can just completely get lost in them. if you are ever in Houston,TX i recommend checking out the Rothko chapel in the museum district. as well as the Menil collection next door (they have a wonderful collection of surrealist painters and have quite a few Warhol and Picasso peices)

For interesting and addicting, may I serve up Rene Magritte.
For opening Pandora's box to deviant art, leave it to Egon Schiele, if you dare go there!
